Street tires for stock rims...Questions
 

Alright so come spring time I am looking to ride my KLX on the street 95% of the time. The only time I will be off roading is around Labor day weekend for a annual camping trip and maybe some trails by my cottage. So I am just going to switch out my tires and my gearing for those times. I may even take the KLX on a 350 mile (round trip) journey to my cottage if I am feeling brave enough.

My main thing I need to look into is tires. I was looking for some street only tires and did some searching on the forum but came up with little. I am looking for something that will last. I have only found Dunlop D404 that have the correct rim sizes.
As far as tubes go, can I run tubes in tubeless tires? I don't know how that works.

I am also looking to not spend a ton so if anyone knows of a tire and a online store throw out some suggestions please as well as your opinions on street tires!

Fit some Kenda 270's. They'll last forever. Good on road and if you fancy the odd gravel road then you'll have the goods. Cheap too. Ask Deej for a recommendation.

I use Michelin Sirac tyres on my KDX125sr & I plan to use them on my KLX when its due tyres..

They have a good looking tread that is good on tarmac & they are not bad on dirt either.

I was just going to say the Kenda K270 tires, I got one on the front of the bike that is only the second tire in 13,000 miles. The rear Kenda lasted about 4,000 miles. Its a quiet tire with some off road properties if you need it. ;)

Thanks for the replies. I am leaning more toward the style of the Michelin Sirac but I dont want to spend that much. I have found some Kenda's that look like them and are $50 a piece (K761). I am really looking for a 100% street tire that will last in the rear 6000+miles (if possible). And when my camping trip comes up I will just swap my tires out a week ahead of time.

I have a set of Shinko 700's for summer tires. They are great as street tires (quiet) not so good in mud but dry trails are fine. Seem to be lasting a while, front has no wear the back is starting to show some use from hard riding.

Yes, you can run tubes in the tires. Most manufacturers will tell you it drops the tire speed rating by one level, but that's no big deal at all.

I ride a KLX650 about 90% pavement 10% dirt/gravel. I run Duro Median HF903/904 tires first trying them when I was laid off and didn't have much money, they were agressive looking and about $100 for the pair. I still run them 10 years and over 27,000 miles later. I found I could ride with my buddies on their supermotos very aggressively, I've actually scraped a boot in a corner and never had it break loose at all unless I made it do so. I also have run them off road when we dual sport ride in WV around Snow Shoe resort in the summer. I've not had any problems with traction there either.

I replace them at about 4000 miles, because the tread has flattened enough on the rear to lose enough traction on gravel that I don't like it and the transition to the round outside edges is more noticable than I want. The front is cupped enough I toss it at the same time... at $100 for the pair, why not. Tires Unlimited carries them for roughly $100 plus shipping. Other bike parts places sell them too.

You can't see it in the picture, but the tread has sort of webbing from side to side between the blocks, which makes them squirm less under cornering. The tread is full depth otherwise and is quite deep. They carry a 90/90-21 a 120/80-18 or a 4.10-18 if the KLX runs an 18. The 650 runs a 17 rear.

I am pretty sure you can find Bridgestones that fit. I have a 1984 Honda Inteceptor and it sports the same rear tire size as my KLX250 (110/90-18) Try searching for Bridgestone Battle-Axe tires...pure street.
