I'm planning on getting a new 48 tooth rear sprocket, I know Alum is lighter and more expensive but does it really wear out faster and does the lesser weight really make a difference? or should I just get a good quality steel sprocket. All opinions welcome.

BTW I am planning on getting a RK XSO Series X-Ring Chain.

OK I think that Canada should stop dumping raw sewage in the ocean, I think cats are the best pets, even though my wife is allergic and I can't have one, I think Chinese food is the best, and I could eat it 5 days a week. I think I-Pod's and 22 inch wheels are over-rated, and I also think global warming is over exaggerated. I think using IMO in every post is being abused, and finally I think they should invent a pill that would help you with whatever is wrong with you without adding symptoms that are worse than what you have in the first place...............................oh the sprockets, whoops my bad. Uhhhhhhh I don't know, I'm still a noob.

 

i would imagine that steel is better, how much more can a steel weight than a alum one?

 

I know they are way more expensive, but I went with the Sidwinder Tri-moly 49 tooth sproket for the lifetime carbon fiber teeth and the light weight aluminum body.

I round off my sprokets pretty quickly so for me, this made the most sense.

Just from what I know about steel and aluminum, I'd say a good quality steel sprocket will last longer and wear better than any grade of aluminum. Regarding weight difference, it is a lot - my 49 tooth Renthal is very light in comparison to the stock 42 tooth steel sprocket. But will that difference in weight really make a difference in your riding? I doubt it - unless you are a competitive pro racer I doubt you'll notice any difference at all. I'd be far better off dropping a few lbs around my mid-section than worrying about sprocket weight, but that's just me.

 

This was posted like almost a year ago, and I commented on how this was funny that they show the proper way to lube the chain and its getting all over the tire, yea that safe LOL.

 

I always hold a rag behind the other side.

 

It runs about $140 beans....Not cheap...
