See... I was right. I said "maybe".

 

What kind of seal is it? Ceramic? O-Ring? Pictures?

 

The exterior seal is an oring. the starter shaft seal is a rubber type. It was wayyy to nasty to take pics, the crap was all over my hands.

Part 92055 is the o ring that seals off the starter gear to the outside. The starter shaft which doesnt have a part number, its to the right of 92055B is what goes through the end cap of the starter, which also doesnt have a part number. That sucks because you cant buy what i need. the part between 92055 and 92055B is the end of the starter. Which has a needle bearing in it for the starter shaft on the inside of the bearing there is a seal to keep out motor oil, the bearing and the seal are not labeled. So if i had to buy the end of the starter i would need to buy the entire assembly which is $260. to get the armature and the endcap of the starter with bearings and the seal. I found a used starter off ebay i will tear down when i get it.

 

I replaced my battery last fall , used a battery tender all winter and the battery still acted like it was dead. threw a charger on it for a few minutes and it started . rode it for 30 miles shut it off and it still would not start. Third battery in 6 years. Maybe I have the same problem.

BTW. to remove the starter i had to rotate the carb, remove the T handle fuel screw, and remove the exhaust.

 

You can see all the residue left from the oil in there.

Look at 5 o clock and 8 o'clock. See the black oil... that was EVERYWHERE in the starter. dripping when i opened it up. So that seal had to have been bad for a long time.

 

Im thinking the oil in the starter either shorted it out and wouldnt let it start or it added resistance to it and the battery and cables didnt have enough power to turn it over. It started fine when it was cold. Weird.
