Learned to run a paper filter in new rebuilds because the shards of breakin metal are hard to clean out of the stainless filters.

I mostly just back flush the filter with spray solvent, then back blow some air through it. Sometimes take it in to the sink and run detergent and water through. Most oil changes I just pull it out, inspect it closely fro debri, and put it back in.
