Default Spare Wheelset?

I've been thinking of getting a second set of wheels/tires to swap for commuting vs trail duty. I don't think I really want to get a set of 17" SM rims because the tires are expensive and I may wander off the pavement from time to time. Has anyone picked up a spare wheelset of 21/18's, if so where did you get them and how much were they? Its nearly $700 just for hubs from www.bikebandit.com let alone the spokes and wheels and then getting them laced/trued.

That's waaaaay too much for hubs. I'd try e-bay, see if you can fit a pair of KLX300 wheels. The going rate for a complete wheel is around $200 each from e-bay, give or take. $700 will buy a custom built wheel, heavy duty spokes, black anodized excel rims, lacing and truing. A hub should be in the ball park of around $100 - $150 new. Rims similar.

I'm in the same boat. I seem to remember discussion of 300 wheels not working. However, I was told kdx 200-220 post 97wheels would work. My roomates both have kdx's and although I haven't actually robbed their wheels to try, which I probably should as it would be very helpful info, I have recently taken measurements and it looks like it will work.Haven't found anykdx wheels for sale however.

I have a front wheel from a KDX that is supposed to fit the KLX250S but it has just been sitting in the workshop. If someone wants it, pm me as I will sell it for $100 plus shipping. It would be used for the off road set as it is used but it looks ok but needs some TLC and cleaning. It has the speedo drive, rotor and bearings (don't know how good they are). There is no tire on it. I will provide pics.
Thanks,
Dave

I was watching 3 KDX fronts on e-bay only1 seller got back to me and the 89 model doesn't have the drive hub for the speedo.....even though bikebandit.com shows the assembly having a drive hub. The other 2 are a 92 and a 91 but the sellers won't answer me if they have the drive tabs or not. Rear wheels I've been unable to find period. KDX or KLX for that matter.

The OEM hubs are $265 and $352each from most online vendors last I checked. I've yet to find a custom wheel builder that has KLX250 listed as one of their options. Anyone remember who Patrick used on the KLX DirtBike TV episode?

Davebert, you are correct the wheels off the kdx will fit directly onto the klx, I have both bikes and change the wheels around all the time..... getting better at it... or check the bike wreckers they should have wheels that will be cheap.....

I have a set of KLX 300 rims I got of ebay for 275 the had kenda dual purpose tires more for the road. They had less than 500 miles on them and came with both axles. They fit a with no problems 1800 miles on them. I run the stock gearing for the street and for the dirt I run a 14/48, It is close to running a 13/42 but you will need two chains.
