Solved a problem I didn't have
A while ago I purchased an older Street Pilot III (color) on the cheap with the idea of using it off road and not caring if it got beat up. The problem is, this unit is rather large and not easy to put on a bike and have it out of the way for protection in a fall. At the same time I want a gps for off road rides to track the trails and for the enduro coming up, but I didn't want to spend money on another GPS.
In looking at my bike I noticed the stock gauges are about the same size as the GPS...hmmm, do I REALLY need the stock gauges? All I really need to know is how fast I am going and how far I have gone, right? I can feel the bike run out of power, a tach is not needed really.
So, out came the stock gauges and in their place the GPS. I will load up some pics, but it looks like a pretty good set up. Needs to be battle tested and secured some more. Anyone think I am crazy?

I would be lost without a tach and speedo. I wouldn't know what gear I was in half the time, or when to change the oil or do any maintenance for that matter.
I went with a hand held Garmin Legend. Very cheap, water/mud resistant and it fits nicely on my bike. I'm sure you could sell yours and make enough for a cheap Garmin.

I can't speak for others but with this little motor, its relative low power and 20+ years of riding, I do not need a tach to know where I am gear wise, especially off road.
As for maintenance, my bike as 350 miles on it since November 2006 and has had 5 oil changes and a valve check. I change coolant and brake fluid each year, valves are checked each year and the oil is changed after every three serious dirt rides. This is not my street bike and the idea is not to spend money but try and use what I had laying in the garage.

That is sweet how you fitted the GPS into the speedo cluster spot. I use a Garmin GPSMap60cs on a handle bar mount. It works quite well for me and its still portable, so I can take it with me when hiking.
Heres a pic of my setup. Ingorne the Odometer, old pic, KLX now has 4K miles.

Well if you are determined to go that route it's your bike but that isn't a very good solution IMO. Not having idiot lights is asking for trouble. You should consider the Ram Mount for the Street Pilot III http://www.mountguys.com/ProductDeta...I&click=21
I got this mounted to the bars, but the clock is really close to the buttons, I guess the clock is going to have to go.
actually the mirror is too close, hmmmm what am I going to do? I wish the GPS could mount to the cross bar, but its too small. Maybe I can make some sort of garden hose wrap that will allow me to mount it there.
