Default Signal Minder Running lights...

Okay, so this weekend I did some pro-bono work for a buddy on his KLR. He had installed a Kisan Signal minder a few years back and some patched wires needed to be redone properly. 15 minutes diagnosis, ten minutes of quality silver solder and everything is right as rain *pats self on back*. The unit does some nifty stuff like making stock turn signals into running lights, providing 4 way flashers and escort lights, and providing automatic TS cancellation. All good things in my mind. He has an extra of the same unit (which I thought might make a good trade for fixing his) and I was wondering the following

1. Has anyone installed a signal minder https://www.kisantech.com/index.php?cat_id=4 from this company on a KLX and which did they use?

2. Are the stock turn signals direct compatible with a LED TS set-up

3. How much wattage is available on this bike for accessory lighting before you need to upgrade the coils?

4. If there is a signal minder suitable to the KLX, the website mentions registering your club for discounts.... Any moderators wanna jump on that before we all start making purchases? ... pretty please

i like the idea. the ts canceler would be nice, but what kinda sells me it the emergency flashers. does the unit have an option to not have the signals and running lights, thats one thing i dont like.

i asked the company a few months back, there reply was:

KLX 250S 2009 model shows as using 3-pin Denso relay. Our SM-3 signalMinder should work on that.

I believe (read the website and interpret for yourself if you like) that since it says it's an option to make them into running lights, that you do not HAVE to convert your TS into running lights but simply have it available as a choice.

It reads "Built-in options such as Running Light Conversion, allows you to convert all the turn signals to running lights."

Now whether or not you HAVE to do the running light hook up in order to take advantage of the emergency and escort flasher options, that I do not know. I'd imagine a call to the company would sort that out quickly enough. I really like the running lights b/c where i live, being seen by other drivers is at a high priority and since I already have those 4 lights on my bike, using them as running lights greatly increases my visibility to drivers without having to install a lot of accessory stuff. My friend has it on his KLR and I really like how it works out. It doesn't interfere with the normal TS operation and being able to program them to shut off after an appointed amount of seconds is a dream deal.

What i dont know is if the stock KLX system is LED friendly, and if the modified KISAN system is also. I'd like to use LED's to improve visibility and also to cut down on draw with having the signals all on in case I do something like forget to turn off my key... not that I've ever made a mistake like that.

Now I just need to find out if the 09 and 07 ts set-up is the same, in addition to all the previous questions still to be explored

1. Haven't installed one yet.

2. The signal minder is a solid state flasher that replaces the stock flasher unit on the the KLX, so that part of the conversion will be done. You will probably need to unhook the stock, incandescent turn signal indicator bulb in your instrument cluster or replace it with a properly wired-in LED. Otherwise, the incandescent indicator will cross feed enough current to make both LED signals flash with only one selected. This is for an 06/07 KLX250S. I don't have a diagram for the 09, so I'm not sure if anything has changed.

4. You have roughly 70W of headroom for accessories (add about 10w for the 09). The stator 'coils' are already maxed out on the dual sport KLX250S. No further upgrade is possible.

Thanks for the great info tremor, I'm assuming that that 70W of headroom is AFTER my headlamp and tail lamp being on, correct?

thanks for the answer jack. i understand what your saying, and would do it my self if i had stockish looking lights, but mine are SUPER small and tucked in and it would look retarted with my set up. i have enough people looking at me to figure out if its a dirt bike or not alreadly.

Okay so now I have conflicting reports.... Guy at dealership (who owned same bike) said that LED's are a direct fit swap, just tie into existing wires and go. Tremor's comment (and some bikes are like this, reflects the kind of system where the lights ground across each other and if you dont isolate the indicator light by creating an independent ground and using diodes for input from either side then you get 4 way LED flashers. I'd really LOVE for even just one guy on the forum to say he put in LED's and didn't have to do the mod.. or found he did. Any takers?
