Default Shifting and that star thing a ma jig

Hey guys

Long time No See...
It's been awhile, hope everybody is good and had a good thanksgiving.

I've started to have some issues that I wanted to ask you guys about. I'm starting to see where the bike will drop out of gear more and more when trying to shift. IE: say from 1st to 2nd. The shift completes for just a second and then the tranny will drop back a gear all on it's own with no help from me. It does this like right after I shift.

I saw something before for this out on one of the Klx sites, I believe it was sort of star shaped piece and was suppose to fix this issue in the klx. My understanding is this is a pretty common issue with the klx250.

You guys know what I'm talking about right, Deej, Brian? Anybody got the link to the web site to order this part, anybody know the price. Finally has anybody installed one. How hard was it to install and did it do the job it's suppose too and help with shiftng on our little klx-250. My bike is a 06 model ifI remember right. Thanks in advance guys and If I dont See you again Merry Xmas....

the star will help make shifts crisp and avoid a false neutral between gears. but if you are getting into gear and it just drops out then the engagement dogs on the gears may be wearing out and either need to be replaced

You are correct, it just drops back into the previouis gear. I will be shifting from first to second and second will engage fine for just a sec. Then it feels like it drops into nuetral for a sec as the motor will free spin because of the throttle input and then a second later will drop back into first. It's starting to happen more and more. Not 100% certain there is actually a issue or I'm just not banging the gear hard enough when I change gears. I just know its something that has started to happen more and more.

I was hoping the star thing I had seen many moons ago was the fix but from what your saying it could be the Engagement dogs too. Any idea how hard these would be to replace. I know longer have a warranty on my bike so i'm screwed there. I'ma pretty good wrench turner but dont think I could rip the tranny apart on my own. Comments please, Thanks.....

tranny's not too bad - time consuming though.

its part of why i love bikes. they are so wasy to work on compared to cars

new 1st and 2nd gears would probably run you about 100$ if you do the work yourself.

I fixed this myself by modding (grinding) my own star...
Don't buy the KLX300 star from Four Stroke Works - it fits, but your neutral indicator no longer works right. (the light comes on in 5th rather than neutral, which causes issues with the starter lockout circuitry).

Hey LV, good to hear from you. You could just buy the new redesigned '09 which has all these problems with the tranny fixed and let someone else mess with your bike after you trade it.

Hey LV I guess I missed this thread. How's it going man? I have had the weird shift issues from time to time, and its frustrating to say the least. If I concentrate on trying to wedge my foot down between the shifter and the foot peg it seems to keep it from doing it when I up shift. Didn't the 300 have some sort of start mod upgrade at one time? I hope it passes, but most likely it won't. Later
