shifter adjustment
ol'klx-er: so, what did you do here? Cut the shifter and splice in a new piece? How much? Do you have a pic? Thanks!
I just moved it up a couple of splines, and changed to bolt to an allen head. I think that I shaved a bit out of the gap so that it tightened better on the splines. Most of the bikes I have had, the shifters always sort of flopped around a bit.
I think the Honda lever is the XR650L not the XR650r as EMS mentioned. ??
Here is the Honda lever I put on my KLX note the length difference. I will look to see which model Honda I ordered for.

Dan, you're correct. It's for a Honda XR650L not "R" model. I use that shifter too. It's been great. It's mild steel, and it survives crashes and tipovers quite well. I only have a size 10 foot, and I couldn't hardly even use the stock length with my riding boots. If I cocked the OEM shifter up high enough to clear my boot, it was pointing high enough that I could almost reach down shift it like a Hurst floor shifter.

I should add that I think the MSR lever is beefier than the stocker, and that may have contributed to the bending of the internal pin that limits the shifter movement. In other words the stronger lever transfers more force to the internal pin in a crash. From the looks of the internals it was something that had happened over time, not just one hit.


It was already bent when this picture was taken, so this is a freebie crash.

On the stiffness between OEM and MSR mild steel versions, I had my OEM off doing some tweaking and bending trying to get it to work better before getting the MSR. I also slightly tweaked the MSR to suit me better. They felt about the same in rigidity when bending them to suit, but I didn't have the rigidity dyno hooked up, so I could be wrong.
