Shift Star Fix- Detailed Write-Up?

Laid my 09 down on a slick rock this weekend and broke the dreaded shift star. Part is on the way from Bike Bandit. I am going to rent an impact wrench and try to change it out myself- Does anyone have a detailed write up they could share?

Which part did you order? p/n 610 is the usual one to break.

I ordered 13091. The bike shifts 1-N-2 fine but cannot shift above 2nd. I don't think the stud is the issue?

Another possibility is the return spring pin may have gotten bent. You should be able to do the work with a socket set, no impact wrench needed. When you get the cover off, you'll see that on the shifter shaft is part of the shift ratchet mechanism. In the center of that is a pin/dowel that is screwed into the crank case. Those have been known to get bent, causing your problem. p/n 92150

I'd lay money on 92150-that's what usually causes your symptoms.

13091 is the contactor for the neutral indicator-doesn't do anything for shifting.

13145: HOLDER,CHANGE DRUM 13091-1856 <-- star shifter

13091: HOLDER,CHANGE DRUM 13091-1862 <-- neutral indicator?

I have one on the shelf for my '09, but haven't gotten around to changing it. I mostly ride sand.. not much rock around here.

Yep-13091 is the contactor for the neutral switch-it provides the ground path to complete the electrical circuit.

Ok, I did order 13145. How likely is it that the issue is 92150? I may order that part and wait for it to arrive before opening things up.

It's almost guaranteed you ordered the right part. Don't sweat it. I can't recall - not looking at parts diagram at the moment - is 92150 the dowel pin that locks the star to the drum? Very unlikely you broke that.
To change the star really is a simple job. No how-to write up on it here, but if you look at the pics in the sticky thread (and follow the links in the sticky) you'll see much of what you need to. Having the factory service manual would be ideal. The job is a lot easier with a 1/4" wobble extension to get at the nut that is partially shielded by the frame rail.
