If this came from the factory with the upgraded part, this reinforces my opinion that it was a good idea to change this out.

 

I bought the bike used, with 200 km on it about 13 months ago.
It must have come from the manufacture with the newer part.

 

Hmm. I haven't really paid attention to what country the riders with broken shift stars here were from. I wonder if different stars were used in different production runs bound for different countries? It's also possible that the star was broken in it's short life prior to you buying it...the world may never know...

I still think it's worthwhile to pull the cover and see what you've got in there.

 

So the 06/07 might be ok? That's good to hear. And just another reason the 06 is better!!! Oh no he di'int! Just kidding guys, glad this is being resolved.

 

You're incorrigible. Though I think I tend to agree - the '06-'07 model was better overall.

 

Quick question....do you HAVE to remove the front sprocket to change it....or can you get the cover off with ratcheting wrenches? I have an 09 and I want to replace it if it is the junky style....Thanks!!!

 

Yes, you have to remove the front sprocket.

 

The parts are in stock and I'm about to delve into replacing the shift star since it won't shift past second. The little metal stub that broke off should be easy to find? Can it work its way into the transmission cavity? Hate to have it wander into somewhere it can do more harm..... TIA Mike

 

Well, there is an oil passageway in the bottom part that it could go through...and the oil flow will be trying to carry it that way. I don't know if this goes to a screen (like in the KLR650), or, if we even have an oil screen, or if it goes directly to the sump. If it does one of those two things, the screen will surely catch it, or, a magnetic drain plug is a good thing to have for this reason. If it makes it to the sump, it has a chance of dumping out with an oil change, but, I wouldn't count on that...too many little nooks and crannies for it to hide in.
