I broke my shift star on my 2010 after changing my oil. My gear leaver caught on my bike stand as I was taking it down. It was stuck in neutral.
When I got the new one from the dealer I thought they ordered me the wrong one. After I figured out it was the old model I went ahead and put it in (easy job). I think it shifts way better. I used to have problems getting it into 1st when stopped. Now I'm sort of glad it broke.

I rode my bike into a really hard enduro trail with lot of fallen trees an logs, long story short, i made my way over a stump and i think the shifter hit the stump, no longer after i stall the engine, so i get into neutral, start the engine, want to shift into 1st gear but im stuck into neutral, shifter do not make any sound when i move it up and down, so i think i broke the star, my bike is a klx 250s 2010. My question, my bike is still under warranty do the dealer will replace it with the same parts or kawasaki replace this with an improved version of the star. Because i dont want to push my bike into a nightmare like that again

Default busted star

I believe the dealer will replace it with the updated version. I have had two of them replaced, second time with the updated version, and am paranoid of left side falls. Love the bike otherwise.

I have never broken the shift star , But after a left hand laydown , it is a bitch to hit neutral at times, adjusted clutch many a time and is worse when hotter after a hard ride , I live in Bali and this bike runs hot as after 10 mins , never mind in traffic.

Perhaps I will pull cover and a peek , Ingteresting post guys thanks

i used to miss shift all the time before it broke in april, and when i got the new part in the mail i thought it was a mistake. i have had it in for about 3000 miles now and never missed a shift. too bad when it broke i was pretty deep in the woods and it was stuck in neutral. heres a video of how it happened.... snow and crash - YouTube

Looked like a pretty mild lay down. Rocks hiding under the snow that caused the shift star to break?

I've broken two of them.

When I broke mine, I layed the bike down on a frozen lake; wasn't a very hard laydown either. Basically travelling in a straight line slow in 4th gear (~30mph?) and lost the front end. Nothing but the hard, frozen ice/snow crust surface made contact with the shifter.

Teigen posted above in this thread that his broke just by snagging the shifter while taking the bike off of a stand.

Doesn't take much to break the original '09/'10 style (not sure if all '10 models have the bad design). So far I've still never read of any of the '06/'07 KLX250S models, nor any of the KLX250/300R models breaking pins off of the stars. The replacement stars (of good design) have been holding up as well (I believe Kawasaki just reverted back to the '06/'07 design).

Lutz, I have an 09, so, I'm looking to upgrade the star. When I look at Bike Bandit's micro-fiche, I find the 07 guts look nothing like the 09...and, to further complicate matters, the 07 lists a part 13091 that is the star, whereas the 09 part 13091 is NOT the star....the 09 13901 looks like the 07's part number 13280. The 09 star is listed as 13145.

Very confusing....I'd hate to order the 13091 and get the wrong thing.

I am about to order one also.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think if you order one for of the 09, you will get the "new" one.

...assuming whomever you order from doesn't have any of the old ones in stock? That's the part that concerns me.
