So now I need to figure out what to do with it.
So the bike is legit. Call up and say that the plates were stolen. They'll mail you new plates.

Grandpa could sell you the bike for $1, all he has to do is sign it. Usually it's not a problem if you just sign it for him. But him being deceased might raise some problems. I doubt it will because the DMV probably doesn't know he's dead.

Tell them the original owner is deceased, the plates were stolen, and the owner's next of kin would like to sell you the bike for $1.

Tell the truth. Except for it being stolen briefly. Don't mention that. Unless it was reported stolen, then you might have a problem later on if you want to sell it again.

The situation isn't unusual. People sell off their dead parent's stuff all the time. Just make sure he sells it for $1 so you only have to pay 8 cents tax or whatever the rate is in your state.

Wait a minute, it has no PLATES or all the VIN's are scratched off?

I'm sure there is a VIN # somewhere that is not readily accessible.

Here, If I buy a bike that's worth 5 thousand, and I give them proof I paid 1000 for it, they make you pay tax on 5000 bucks.. Too many people claiming they paid way less than they actually did I guess.

The point is that Nova didn't Steal it and the rightful owner got it back. Now the bike is legit so it should be streetable without a hassle.
