Default re: engine swap

I was just looking at all the cost. In pumper carb, 330 big bore, shipping and handling. Why not just buy a drz 400e for cheap, freshing the 400 cc engine with pumper and drive on. I can buy a used one for a couple thousand dollars. Be the same in the long run money wise. Also they have large front forks too!!! The parts that could used with some modification would be greater than ordering stuff from Usa to Canada and paying the same amount in shipping and duty as the part.

Looking for input thanks

Because the DRZ is a 291 pound monster that will destroy you in the tight stuff.

Not only is the KLX 30 pounds lighter, but its weight is lower down on the bike than on the DRZ (which, from what I hear, is VERY top heavy), which translates to better offroad handling.

Not to mention, a brand new DRZ is $1000 more than a KLX. Sure, you can get a used one, but we're not comparing used bikes, now are we?

From the research I did before chosing between the two, they're two very different bikes. I went with the KLX because I only weigh 140 lbs so pulling power wasn't much of an issue for me, and because pretty much all of my trail riding is super tight single track that half the time requires you to ride and walk the bike at the same time.

I just liked the 250 more. Not comparing bikes, but asking has any one but the 400 engine in the 250 klx.
I'm not normal and if I'm going to spend money I thought why not go all out. I also was looking at even a bigger motor. I'd modify whatever to get it to work. I put alot of money into a quad I had. for the money spend fine tuning I'd like to swap a 400 in there. With a complete bike you have wiring cdi and pumper carb. etc. It be a good weekender...

To add I was looking at finding a crashed drz or something that still runs.

I'm certainly no expert, but I have both bikes (the KLX 250s and the DRZ400SM). At 60 years old and riding for 40 years, I've learned that there is a lot more to the riding experience than mere power. Lightweight flickability, traction, low center of gravity, riding position, and reliability FAR outweight mere power gains. I've also learned that in most if not all cases, the engineers at the big four actually know what they are doing. Correcting for smog and lawyer incursions is fine, but I think making huge changes in engine swaps and frame modifications should be though out very carefully. But, that said, this is America and you can do whatever you want!

Good luck and let us know what you do.

If you are talking used bikes, why not pick up a used klx for like $3000 that probably all ready has a pipe and other mods, then big bore, pumper that, and throw some cams in it while your at it and still be less than what a new one costs.

I just installed my hmf and almost got the carb dailed in. With the air box lid off, removing the rear frame section and installing a kxfender, changing the gearing to 14/53. It works alot better now I'm better happy. I think when it's due for a valve adjustment I'll slide in some cams, and maybe swap the carb to a fcr. Besides I've only had the bike three months now and only put 2500 miles on it still new. I'm going to worn the cylinder alittle before doing a 331 kit. Thanks for some input.
