Pics From Today 9-22-07
Put on just shy of 70 miles today on a mix of gravel road, trails, and pavement. Here's some pics I took along the way.
Here's a shot from an old railroad bed that starts 4 miles from my house. Its mostly all straight for the next 12 miles, at which point it comes out just down the street from the bike shop where I order most of my parts. The majority of it looks just like this, it does get rough in places with holes 5-8 inches deep and there is some washboarding in places. Farther along there are some woop sections, all hardpack, and you can get some decent air off them. There is one spot where from late April, till the end of June its about 40 feet long and 18 inches deep full of water with nice slick large hidden rocks.......fun...
Looking off the side from where the above pic was taken. The drop on either side ranges from 3-20 feet for the length of the trail....that is.. until you get to the swamps.
Yep...still straight....
There are several swamp sections along here, I'm not sure which local organization did it but all the crossings have nice steel deck bridges on them now.
At the top of this pic there is a small gulley, 7 feet deep or so. The bank is built up on the left and a small plastic pipe runs under the road to the lower swamp on the right.
Swamp pics are a trend today. This is in the Brasher State forest, 19,550 acres, large area of it is swampland. Interesting how much swamp area there is considering its Northern NY. This and the next picture were taken from the truck trails, roughly 1.5 lanes wide all gravel. There are many many many trails off from these however they are off limits until further notice. An uninsured quad rider was hurt a few towns over and sued the town and won..........as such all public property is off limits to atv's and mc's, regardless of if it is a dual sport or not. The only reason I can ride the truck trails is because they are considered a town road.
This was taken at a public campground about 15 or so minutes away from my house by pavement. Itook the scenic route through the above truck trails and only had a few miles of pavement to get here. When I was a kid my dad and I used to bring our RC cars and RC boat up here and run them all afternoon.
Just a little dam keeping the pond level high.
More dam

Looking out across the water just above the dam
Standing below the dam and zoomed in to the beach across the water. There is a trail/road behind me that loops around over there and then there it makes roughly an 8 mile loop out through the forest and back to where I'm standing. All summer long its been impassible due to the very end of the road flooding.......by you guessed it.... a swamp. I just took the right at the Y around the loop and 3/4 of the way through I found the road flooded. Had I gone the other way it would have been a much shorter trip.
This is where my trail riding ended for the day. Walking back to the bike I could smell something funny. The right carb vent line was melting around the header. Turns out when I put the carb back together I didn't keep the vent line tab aligned properly and it let the line sit on the header. Forgot my house keys which have a nice pocket knifed attached to them so I had to improvise and use the toolkit's screwdriver to cut off the melted section so I could open up the vent line, it melted itself shut. Seems like as good a time as any to do the T-vent mod.
After today, combine sweating with that stock seat and my **** was killing me. The jean shorts were not helping matters any. Think I'll swing by Walmart tomorrow and see about one of their atv seat cushions. KLR riders on www.advrider.com seem to like them and they are only $15 and slip over the seat and attach with straps.
