old guy n00b
Bought a KLX 250S about a year ago and having a blast with it. New to trail riding and loving it. Mostly ride in Mendocino NF and Sierra Nevada Mtns
Had two big problems with the tranny and wondering if others have. The shifter pin broke twice. Once when new, about 500 miles, and once last week, about 2,000 miles. Both times after laying the bike down several times in rough ground, rutts, rocks and hills. First time it was repaired under warranty, the last in on my dime.
Anyone experienced this? Makes me a bit nervious about being miles from anything and having this issue again. Perhaps need to crash less.

Congrats on the bike!!
I'm not sure if this is the same "pin" you are talking about, but I bent the pin/bolt in my shifting mechanisim. It is in the center of the shift fork and limits the shift forks travel up and down. Repeated crashes jammed the shift lever, and thus shift fork, up, bending the bolt in the center upwards. Once this bolt was bent upward enough it wouldn't let the shift fork move down far enough to move across the neutral indentation on the shift star.
Cover off, bolt/pin is the silver thing in the middle of the shift fork.

Pushing shift lever down and Hitting bent bolt/pin before getting shift star all the way through the neutral area on the shift star.

Yup , it's bent.

Just put the new bolt in last night. Shifts like it should now. $6 part from bikebandit.
Cuz Larry, C'mon man, I know your good, but your going to have to step up your game and start wrecking things properly.

Welcome to the forum, your not the only old guy here as I'll be 50 next year and I'm not the oldest here by far. Tons of help here if you need it just ask as some of these guys are the real experts. I thought I knew alot and most of the time I just take it all in as I can add nothing that they don't know better than I. You will learn that with pretty much a swiss army knife and a leatherman tool you can you can do a complete tear down beside the road and I'm hardly kidding. It sounds like your getting the most out of your ride, so welcome.

I'm in the same boat (err.. bike...) as you... I'm 39, the KLX is my 1st bike... ever... Having a great time with it.... Bought mine @Fairfield Cycle Center. What part of town do you live in?
Any idea where the good fire trails are close to us?

Dan888, nice pics, my busted pin(2) was on the star wheel, one of those six pins let go (twice). They are small little things, but nothing works when one is missing.
Hopefully on the other side of the learning curve and got all the bad crashes out of the way, but I doubt it.
Oldfart, live by Hilborn and Martin. No riding trails close by, I usually go to Letts Lake in Mendocino NF. Seems like hundreds of miles of trails of all ability. Bought the ride at Vacaville Motor Sports or what ever it was called. Been riding mountain bikes for decades, and a trusty BMW K75S for almost 20 years, so the KLX is a natural and very fun fit.
Have been lurking on this forum for 14 months, learned a ton from all you inmates and finally decided to join. Thanks..

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread a bit, but the novelty of someone else in Fairfield has some appeal

I live in Paradise Valley, not far from you. Is Letts Lake also know as Stonyford? We rode at Prairie City today, which was a muddy mess of fun.
If you ever see a guy on a green KLX riding around with a yellow jacket/helmet, that's me
Awesome! I'm 46, so I can officially call you an old guy. Nice!
