Default Offroad KLX250SF

I've seen a lot of folks put supermoto tires on their KLX250s, but has anyone put dirt tires on the KLX250SF and taken it offroad? I'd be curious to know how it handles.

I was wondering the same and almost bought the S version instead. Seems like you would just need the other set of wheels with the correct sprocket size and the longer suspension links for the rear to bring up the seat height.

That would make sense money wise, because a set of dirt tires are waaaay cheaper than a sm set....provided the SF bike cost is the same as a regular S.

The SF (with its stock 17" wheels) sits lower than the S with 17" wheels. Not sure if dirt wheels would rub or bottom out on the SF.

Someone try it.

I know that the D-tracker-X (same is the KLX250SF but with EFI) here in Japan has a lot firmer suspensiion than KLX. Might be the same with the SF..the valving might also be slower on the rebound dampening side (most motards are), but I can't say for certain. If that's the case you might have some control issues in the dirt, but the knobbies would sure be a far cry better than the motard tires

I thought the SF had less suspension travel front and rear... I thought that was why its better to buy the S and make it SM than buying the SF and trying to dirt it...

Not always. But in the case of the SF, it's about an inch lower than the KLX250 in the front and rear. I'd say it's OK for just putt, putting down a fire road or taking it super easy on single track.

Not the ideal thing for serious off road use though.

The older D-trackers had the same travel as the KLX.

From what I have read and tried to find through my 50 some odd suppliers there is no 17" DOT dirt tire made. But don't quote me on that, I just know I was trying to find tires for a buddys DRZ400sm and I had no luck. If you want a dirt bike buy a dirt bike if you want street buy street, if you need it lower look at getting the suspension re-done to lower it.
