Default Odometer repair, jury rigged with pics.

After whacking my gauge cluster on a tree and shattering the glass lenses, I repaired the gauges with clear Plexiglas and posted up pics. The tree hit wasn't that hard, it just flexed the cluster, which was too much for the glass to take. After the hit the spedo was still working, so I was happy. Quick fix with the plexi and I'm good to go. Shortly after that I notice the spedo works but the odometer isn't. I took it apart today and found a chunk of glass had wedged in one of the odometer gears, and locked it up. The main worm gear on the spedo cable ended up chewing a spline off the locked up gear and that was the end of the odometers drive.
The missing spline tooth.

The spedo is not made to be taken apart. It could be done, but I'm sure for legal reasons they don't make it easy. The easiest way I found to remove the broken gear was to drill out the little axle it spun on. I planned on drilling deep enough to insert a pin for a new "axle"

More damage, this is where the piece of glass wedged in and stopped the whole works. It's damaged but not enough to keep it from working. I just cleaned up the rough edges.

I melted some pockets in the plastic to give the epoxy I was going to use somewhere to get a grip. Mixed up the epoxy and filled in the damaged area completely.

After the epoxy cured I carved and filed out the extra epoxy just leaving a new spline.
hard to see.

I drilled a hole in the middle of the gear for a new axle. Coat hanger wire was just the right diameter.

It actually works. I will have to see how long it lasts.

In the future I may be looking to buy a stock unit somebody isn't using anymore or one of the vapors. I really don't care much about the spedo, but the odo I want.

Kind of an off the wall repair post here, but I will tell you this. If you happen to break the glass on your speedo, Stop and take the time to unscrew the spedo cable until you canget back home and can clean out all the bits of glass. It might save the gauge.

Do they make, just odometers, for motorcycles? Seems like I have seen something like that for enduro racing.

$65 baja designs, they are old school enduro clocks but is all you really need. you could get a trail tech computer but everyone I've ever been around broke, they did replace some to their credit though.

Talent in reworking damaged equipment I totally appreciate. I have the utmost respect for the WWII era volunteers I work around from the greatest generation.

Your talents/work show that same quality. Bravo Man

I love that you took it apart and fixed it. That's exactly how I roll. And yes I'm cheap too, not by my choice, but money is pretty tight. Again nice work.

Thumbs UP!!!
