new truck, need opinions

Stay far away from the previous generation for Ford Diesels. Cat and Ford are probably still in court fighting over all the costs to fix them. They also have NO power at idle. I'm not kidding either. That motor runs fine when it spinning the turbo's but, off idle it is very weak.

It is actually Navistar International (formerly International Harvester) that builds the Ford PowerStroke engine not Caterpillar.
IMO, I think if you were to drive a Chevy Duramax you would like it better. The overall technology seems to be vast superior in comparison to Ford or Dodge. On the Duramax, how well everything fits together and seems to be of superior materials and engineering makes the other two truck manufacturers seem 10 to 20 years behind the times. The resale value of any Chevy or GMC truck is better than Ford or Dodge. Just listen to the Duramax diesel engine, quiet and smooth! If you have an eye and an ear for quality get the Duramax. If you want something that makes a lot of noise and has cheap plastic parts that just don't fit right - get the Ford or Dodge!
If you get a 2006 or earlier diesel you can run heating oil and save yourself some change that way. 2007 and newer need to run on ultra low sulfer because of the pollution control on the trucks. I'm sure other peole will say elsewhise, but unless you haul off road equipment and have a auxilarry tank in the bed of the truck you will never be stick tested for dye. Another option for a truck is the toyota tundra. Has all the creature comforts, tows close to 10g and is 100% made in the good ole USA. You can't argue with toyota's legendary reliabity either.

I think this would work better given the reality of the situation!

It may be built here in USA, but big deal, so is the F-series, Ram, and GM trucks. The Tundra still supports a foreign company and their workers aren't union members. And who knows if this new Tundra is anything more than larger body panels on a Tacoma chassis like the older Tundra was.
here's my thoughts- Buy a new Dodge minivan and keep your truck. I was in your boat a few years ago but I had a quad-cab Hemi. We bought a new '05 Grand Caravan for the family hauler and it was the smartest thing I ever did as far as buying an automobile. It gets 30 mpg, has more space in it than any 8 ft. pickup bed and the stow 'n go seats all disappear into the floor plus it rides like a Cadillac. You can get them real cheap tooif you buy outright and the new '08's are all new and redesigned with standard safety features like side-impact and side-curtain airbags, abs, etc.Of course if you still need a truck, I would get the mega-cab because even with the quad-cab, it's very small and not nearly as large as the Ford F150 crew-cab which too is a very nice truck with tons of power and room but won't hold a candle to the power of the hemi plus that 5.4 is very noisy and knocks a lot, at least my dad and sister's '04's do. If I were to buy any new truck tomorrow, it'd be a new GMC Sierra Z71. I like the looks and it's all new. The Ford is nice but it's a bit dated. The imports are imo, just posers like jap cruisers to HD's. They're nice, but just don't hit the mark imo. You're supporting a japanese company. And while many of you will say the same with buying a Kawasaki, well there aren't any American dirt-bike companies in which to choose dirt bikes over a Kawasaki.
With gas and diesel prices only on the rise, why would you want a huge money pit if you really don't need one? A truck is really just an ego if you don't really need it imo. If you need a truck to haul your bikes fine, but buying a huge diesel crew just because it's available is downright a waste of energy and money. The new Grand Caravans have dual DVD screens and sirius satellite TV available, yeah I said sirius TV. Any man who says they'll never buy or drive a minivan simply doesn't have the nads to go out and open their mind up to logic and intelligence, not to mention safety and convenience for their family.

Toyota legendary reliability? They have had more recalls this year than any other auto manufacturer, check it, that's a fact.

You are so full of **** it's comical. The recall leader in 2006 was GM and this year it's VW. Where do you find your bullsh!t "info"? I suppose the same place that you "found" that increasing the header diameter increases low end torque.

Everybody hates your guts and nobody gives a **** about your opinion. You are nothing but a POS troll who's screename is an insult to the entire state of Iowa.
Minivans are for soccer moms and women, trucks are for men.IMO
To say that an import is a poser is justplain ignorant IMO. Show me an american mini truck that will perform as well as a toyota off road. You seem to forget this is an import bike forum, yes we are supporting the japanese and will continue to do so as long as the U.S.A companies just make oil leaking, arm shaking, yuppie wanabe biker models. As for duel dvd screens, yes I said duel dvd screens, what good are they when your driving anyways.IMO And for safety you take your rolling sirius sat Tv and crash into my 3/4 ton truck and see who's family walks away with the least amount of bodily injury. This is just my own personal opinion....
