Hello all. I just thought I would formally introduce myself. I've been lurking on this forum for the last couple of months and decided it was time to join because I hope to purchase a KLX 250s soon.

There seems to be a wealth of knowledge on this site about this bike and I hope to learn a lot and maybe sometime down the road be able to contribute.

So first things first....I want to get a price check on a bike I looked at today. It is a 2012 Kawasaki KLX 250s with 240 miles on it. The dealer said I could have it OTD for $4,160. It still has a little over 8 months warranty on it.

Good deal? Bad deal? Thoughts? What should I look for when buying used? (I am a complete newbie at this) Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forum. You found the right place for KLX250 fans. Shoot, about 90% of the traffic here is on the KLX250 boards.

That sounds like a pretty good price on a very lightly used 2012. My dealer is listing new ones at $5K for a 2012 model. Not too many folks tend to look in the new member area though, so you may want to post your question in the KLX250 area and see what others have to say about your questions.

What to look for? With only a couple hunnert miles, I'd say it should start easy, run well, and go through the gears smoothly. Look it over carefully for any damage. If you were buying something with more miles, I'd add to this list. After you get it home, pull out the wrenches and check for loose parts. Dealers don't always get everything tightened down. Torque specs are around here....look in the FAQs under the KLX250 area.

Sounds like a good deal to me. I paid $900 more for a new '12 with no miles. As long as it's in new condition do it!

You could maybe find a more used one for a lot less but sometimes it's hard telling what you are getting. New for 4k out the door is probably not bad.
Good luck.

that's a great for dealer prices...i see used 2009+ klx250s/sf come up for sale from time to time with under 1,000 miles in the $2,800 to $3,500 range....but, the dealer otd price include tax and registration most likely, so doesn't seem bad...

Sounds like a great price to me.

Most warranties expire without ever being used on these bikes so 8 months or 12 months shouldn't make any difference.

Just be sure to put it through it's paces before the warranty does run out. When does your riding season end and when does it restart?

Probably ends mid october and starts end of april for trail riding. I probably wouldn't do any trail riding until next season anyways.

Cool

If there is no evidence of damage from dropping etc, and you still have several months on the warranty, WTF how can you go wrong. Offer $3850, and be willing to go to $4000. If the dealer is stuck on the price and won't budge, then try and get them to do the 600 mile service at no charge, or at least for 1/2 off. Try and get the previous owners name and give a call. Find out why they traded so soon. Sounds like a good deal as is, but go ahead and find out what you can and see if you can tweak it, never hurts if you keep a little of your money. Worse thing that can happen is, the dealer will say no. Have fun with it. BTW: Welcome and good luck.

Why only 8 months left on the warranty? I purchased a new 2009 in 2011 with 400 miles from a dealer and got 12 months warranty and the sticker was $3200, it was a demo bike. Unless it has been registered, I.E. A trade in I would ask for full warranty. The price is decent for a 2012. Good luck and welcome to the forum!
