edit: I just did the math and 2 bikes with the same hp, same temp - 1 at SL and one at 4500' - if the bike at SL can go 84mph then it should be able to go 91.2 mph at 4500 feet.
I guess that explains it... I wasn't trying to top it out, I was just riding highway and playing around a little. I KNOW I had a lot of throttle (and RPM) left. Now I wished I had opened it up while I still had it stock, just to see what it would do for top speed.

The stock jetting is so lean, it would make sense that it would be richer (i.e. about the "right" jetting) for riding at over 4700 feet (as oppoed to someone at sea level).

We definitely enjoy better gas mileage here (about +3 MPG is what I recorded)... and regular gas here is only 85 octane.

My stock 09 wouldn't do that. I did have a D606 on the rear and a Kenda 270 on the front. Heck, there were times going slightly uphill out of Las Vegas into a southerly wind when it would barely hit 60 indicated! With the 331, I haven't maxed it out, but it will run over 80 mph indicated uphill into that same wind. BIG difference!

I had one of those and I thought it sucked. Get the Go Throttle cruise control for $20. Works great, the only thing I don't like if you have bigger hands is you run out of room on the grip.
I've never used either...so, definitely go with the advice of someone that has experience!

I use the Go Throttle on the KLR. Not bad at all for the price, but I've never tried any other throttle lock on a bike so don't have any comparative suggestions. It's also easy to move to another bike.

Hello, I too am new to dual sport riding. I just got a 2012 KLX 250s and Im going to install a 2 Brothers slip on pipe, and a stage 2 Dyno jet kit. I see most people are removing the air box snorkle, so I will do that as well. I also saw people are changing the spark plug to a NGK IX iridum, would like to know more from you guys on this........Has anyone done the P.A.I.R. valve bypass? Any info would be great.....Thanks

I must be the only person on these forums who has a bone stock KLX and plans to keep it that way for the foreseeable future.

Well not the only person..... Actually I did change the seat out to a Seat Concept (good move) and installed a Moose cargo rack but that's it. Personally I'm fine with the performance as is, but I can see how some of the more experienced would like more zip.

Bone stock here too. I may open up the intake and add a stage 1 dyno jet, but I'm fine with the bike as is. I don't ride with anyone else so I have no need to be faster.

I run an SF with 2bros slip-on and jet kit at 1100m (~3500 ft) elev. I have a 13/39 sprocket combo and my speedo is corrected. *

The best top speed I can honestly manage is 120 kmh (75mph). Downhill with tail wind it'll do 135kmh (85mph). I can't see my KLX ever getting up to 90 and over without significant additional mods. At that speed however I would have reservations about speed wobbles.

Once uphills or head winds are encountered top speed can quickly drop to 100kmh (60 mph)...
