Default Never argue with a fool.....

...because nobody will be able to tell you apart. Can't remember who coined that phrase but an hour ago I was reminded of it.

I live in a small (15 or 20 houses) neighborhood several miles away from the nearest town. Just a few shell roads, plenty of vacant, wooded lots around. I always like to warm the bike up a little bit before I pull out on the nearest state road, so I ride around the block and duck into a little loop trail through the woods before heading out. Earlier today I was coming out to the end of the loop and noticed what I thought was a spider web across the mouth of the trail. Only thing was, the web was just a little too straight and thick, and I stopped the bike before I crossed it.

Looked down and discovered that the "web" was 30lb test fishing line. 3 strands total, and stretched pretty tight. Probably wouldn't have hurt me had I crossed it - the top strand ran just under my front fender - but it might have thrown me if all three strands had slowed me down enough. At first a chill ran down my spine when realized what could've happend. Then I was just plain pissed off. A kid on a four wheeler could end up in the morgue from something like that.

A little while ago I rode back over to the spot to talk to the neighbor who lives just across from the loop trail. I know the guy, and figured he would never do something like that. Sure enough, he knew nothing about it, and when I showed it to him - and cut it down - he speculated that the folks who lived just down the street might be responsible.

Sure enough, guy sees us cutting it down and comes over. Seems he's been having a problem with some folks riding through the woods, sneeking up on his property yada yada yada, and sees nothing wrong with "discouraging" such behavior. I ask him if he thinks it's OK to kill kids for any reason. Hemming and hawing ensues. I ask him if he knows what a homicide is - should have asked him if he can spell h-o-m-i-c-i-d-e. Through it all the guy acts like he's done nothing wrong, hey the kids have no right to ride there (it's not his property) and he is just safeguarding his property.

At this point I'm sorely tempted to call the County Mounties and let them handle it, but realize that a handfull of fishing line and lack of common sense are not enough for the cops to do anything. Hey, a dead kid in the street makes national news but this moron has not yet caused such a sensation. In theory, vigilantes are not good for society, but I certainly understand their motives.

Long story short, we should all be careful. This guys ilk is out there in full force and clueless besides.

Definately call the cops, if injury was to occur because of his actions, evenb if it was his property it would be a criminal act. I think it would be a criminal act anyway. IF you called the cops and they went and spoke to hiem before something happened at least it would be documented that he did it and if anything happened later he would be first on the list of perps.

Hunters do that up north of here, where the trail system is new and not "official" even though the forest service recognizes it and is working with the local riding club to make it official next year. Then again, alot of the hunters down here are a little "off"....

That's just stupid. I'd recommend you tell ALL the neighborhood teenage boys about it and indirectly recommend retaliation. Is that juveinle? Hell yeah, but so is stringing fishin' line between trees. If the trail led DIRECTLY to his property, as in, if you kept going straight with no turn offs, then I could understand blocking it off. But even then, not with fishing wire.

I would have called the cops, make up some story about how you was patroling the area and found this problem. It will be logged in there system, and the pd will probaly strongly advise him to not do it again.

Sorry Nobrakes, couldn't help myself, just poking a little fun !!

someone just did that right behind my house a couple weeks ago and they actually used a come-along with steel cable stretched across a path I tore it all down and about a week later was walking my dog when I noticed someone with a shovel on the same path, so I waited till they were done doing whatever and watched to see where they went and walked down and before I could get there a buddy of mine rode through and up to where i was and I noticed both of his tires were flat. It turns out the guy buried in 9 different spots huge pieces of ply wood with about 100-150 nails in each piece

Is it private property?

It's times like this the 13 year old in me wants to come out and play. It gets me sooo worked up that I would want take the fishing line and do the same thing by his door step but I wouldn't, I would make sure like someone said the incident is logged with the authorities.

It's not private property at all and the guy that did it lives a half mile away from where we ride and his reason for doing it was that he didn't like the noise and seeing tire tracks when he would walk his dogs up there, and I guess I'm not mature enough to not do anything, I got him back!!!!!
