Need some backyard engineering help
As I was examining the lower cases for the `98 YZ I am restoring, I noticed that on the flywheel side, where the electronics exit the ignition cover, the rubber boot is cracked to such an extent that the individual wires are exposed. (no. not the conductors, I see the wire sleeving of the wires)
Because this is usually a vector for water to enter the system and cause problems, I've been trying to think of a way to seal up the boot.
I'd order a replacement boot but, guess what?
They evidently do not make one. You have to buy the entire assembly
Since I do not want to spend another $200+ for the sole purpose of replacing a cracked rubber boot, does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix it without resorting to buying a replacement?

The smart answer would be to replace the part with new.
"YZ Works" in Baltimore should be able to help, alternatively try "Speed And Sport" in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. Both specialize in Yamahas and can access hard to find OE parts.
As I understand it the case is a dry case (no oil). I doubt it will get hotter than 100oC and bathroom silicone can cope with boiling water quite easily.

Sorry I'm so late with the pics.
Was watching my NFL Films DVD about 6-Burgh's SB Win
Here's a shot of the wires where they come out of the case. It's not so much a problem locating a replacement "grommet". It's that that particular grommet is part of another part and you cannot get it separately. It's either buy the entire $200+ piece or fix the grommet.
I think what I'll do is grab a twist-on soda bottle lid and drill a hole in it the same size as the wires that come out. Then I'll cut it so that I can slip it around the wires and slide it down against the case. Then I'll fill that with silicone sealant. That should be large enough to totally encase the exposed area and cover up the grommet.
