Mystery writing
Took off the skidplate and cleaned up the gunk (newly purchased '06) and found this writing on the bottom of the engine.
Anyone know what this means? Does it give any clues as to something the PO had done to the engine?

When I installed my skid plate on my '14 recently, I recall there being some writing there too. Can't remember what it was, but similar to yours I think. From factory I'd guess.

Odds are since the number is on both cases essentially "out of sight" it is a factory marking indicating the two cases are a machined pair for assembly, ready for assembly. It could have some indication of tolerance for QC. Kind of like all the markings on cars in the various places under the hood, chassis and so many other places. I've seen grease pen markings on engines before back when selling new bikes.
In a classic car restoration one of the things done are to put any paint markings or stickers in all those obscure places. This marking could be an interesting thing if it was on a 1972 Z1 KZ900.
