Its raining like cats and dogs with no end in sight down here in The Boot so I think I'm finally going to tackle something we all love to hate about these bikes...

Time to delete that rear fender

Any other '09 owners get rid of the monstrosity and keep the stock taillight?

Thanks for the pics, Tmoe, and I'd like to see yours as well, JRock.

Does anyone have pics of the taillight removed? More specifically, of how it mounts to the big dorky plastic thing? I'm not gonna hack up the black thing, I'm gonna remove it all together, just incase I ever sell it.

Basically I'm planning on removing the black thing, and fabbing up the metal into a mounting point for the brake light and signals, and then using the stock plate bracket (minus the dorky reflector wings) for the plate. Should be able to tuck the signals in a bit more (as you can see my lefty is sagging due to lay-downs).

what your'e plannin sounds good. i would like to see the results.
I knew mine was kinda a hack-job, but i couldn't stand the original any longer. Saw on here somebody put a drz400 kit from langston racing, thought that looked good.
Good luck,
keep us posted.

Default another '09 tailhack

Cut the plastic flush with the bottom of my plate, tossed the plate hanger. I left the mini side "wings" on the fender 'cause I see a lot of muck plastered on 'em after testy rides.

Here is the bracket they make over here to do that. Cold be easily made form sheet metal or aluminum.

I will be doing this myself soon, will post a template after I get it done.

this is the best '09 cut there is. this is the "sweet spot" I've been mentioning since I got my bike. It's free and it's how it should've been from the factory. good job.
I thought about mounting my plate directly under the light though, to the plastic itself. Looks like you used the plate holder which looks okay too, but the plate could be scooted up a hair if mounted to the platic alone.

I had my fender cut like that at first but when I took an unexpected big jump, my tires crushed my plates! Just a little heads up!
