I took the mudflaps off my car... 
And that's exactly why I hacked so much and used the piece of alluminum reinforcement... if you leave the plate in the stock place and hack the bottom off, the plastic is kinda thin and somebody has posted pics before of cracked fins. Just take the time to trim it up high and mount the plate in the thick of the plastic or with a piece of alluminum.
