My Month in Colorado... Aug 2012
I am a little late, I had most of this done, but editing the video (I had to edit them all at least twice to due to various reasons took a week) & figuring out how to get it on the www was another week (what a mess google+ was). I was going to put this in a blog, but could not find a good www site. While I was on my trip, I didn’t usually have internet, so I just made a doc. The beginning is at the bottom, so if you start at the top you are going back in time as you progress.

I had a great time at the RMAR at Silverton. I did a adventure bike ride the first day & cinnamon loop the next. The guys & food were great. Weather was excellent. Planning on returning with the group next year. I though I had some video or pictures of the ride but came up blank, so I’ll do better next year covering the ride. I am presently planning on the “howling @ the moon” DS ride in Payson, AZ in October as the next ride.

Note: Videos are recorded in TV resolution, to see clearer, just pause the video as the bike riders pass to view pain on their expressions. I really had to cut the videos down from their full length, then make massive cuts to get the file sizes down for posting. If your interested in getting the full videos, let me know & I'll just put them on a CD and mail them.

TRAVEL DAY..... FROM CO TO home in AZ.

8/31/2012
MOTO DAY:
Decided to try and find Toltec, CO. Got about 1 mile from where I thought it would be and the "SIGN".... NO MOTORIZED VEHICLES... so decided to run down in the valley below and see if I could see anything. Nice canyon, but could not see anything. The small gauge railroad runs right through there.
So packed up and headed to Chama. Nice little old town. It has one of the RR engine yards and stops for the railroad, got pictures, picked up a New Mexico Gazzette Map and headed back up 17 to Lobato, headed up to the national forest from there, the way the signs are you think that the road is private, but it is not.
Unpacked the Kawa and headed up the ATV trail FR741, west out of camp. Most of the other trails around here are horse/hikers. I got out about 9 miles and run into some ATV riders sunning themselves. They said if you follow the trail on up about 18-25 miles, then park it you can hike another 2-4 miles up to a nice waterfall, you can see it as you approach, but the motorized trail does not go there. A couple of hunters on ATV's pull up and said that you can't ride the loop back to camp, it is an OUT/BACK. Since I already had about 110 miles on the Moto today, I decided to head back to camp. There are a lot of big campers/hunters/ATV's/horses at the camp, so it is pretty busy. I plan on staying the night, so I hope it quiet's down a little more. But it is not like camping by a highway...

MOTO DAY: Video of the area around La Manga Pass.

MBike RIDE/TRAVEL DAY:
Just finished a MBike ride in east of BuenaVista, CO. It was fun and about 2000' of climbing. When I got back to the trailer, I found I did not have maps/$20/drivers liscence/insurance card. And the last place I saw it was way at the top of the climb. So I unloaded my Kawa and went in search. There was a guy on a ATV in the area earlier, so I thought he might have found it since I did not see it where I last had it out to put the maps away. So off to search for him, the guy in the Jeep said he went that way, so I went about 5 miles down that trail, finally found his ATV, but he was off hiking somewhere. Since I had to turn my reserve gas "on" on the way out, I was getting worried, I would be pushing! But I found it at a camera stop I had forgot about near the top of the climb, thank goodness.
I am having lunch again in Salida, CO. It has a good brisket sandwich!
To La Manga Pass, west of Conejos, CO.
Camped out at the top of the La Manga Pass, approximately 10,000ft.
One thing I have found out, it is a lot cooler (Good) in the mountains this time of year. If I had to stay in the valley I would just pack it in and drive on home.

TRAVEL DAY:
I am in BuenaVista, I think I'll spend the night here and do a MBike ride tomorrow morning out east of town, it looks nice. I would go now but the afternoon rains have come. I am at the library.
Between FairPlay & BuenaVista, nearer FairPlay, it is rolling high pasture land with huge cattle ranches and miles of grass without trees. As I was driving along, I looked out in the field and there was a brown bear (it looked really black) running accross the plains about 100 yds away, he must have just crossed the hywy. He was about 4' tall and galloping fast, pretty big.
I think I am getting used to trailer life. Since I it's nearing the end of my trip.... what else can I do before heading back?

8/27/2012
ROAD BIKE DAY:
Road up Loveland pass, got lost first….

TRAVEL/PRO CHALLANGE FINAL DAY:
Had peach pancakes w maple syrup @ Tullin's in Boulder, then headed out to Denver. Had quite some time to kill so, stopped @ Panera's and found out I forgot my computer charging cable, so drained that in an hour. Stopped @ 2 bike shops & 1 moto shop & ended up with some new moto boots & gloves & some long leg tights for those cool mornings. The last bike shop was about 7 blocks from the START/FINISH so I just headed up there on foot. Found a nice spot near the checking, had a brat, called bill & susan, found them, we all went back to the area near the check in as there were some chairs, shade & a view-i-tron. Pleasant afternoon, then headed back to camp in Dillon before the football crowd hit the highways.

TRAVEL/ROAD BIKE DAY: See Video ProChallenge… On this stage you have very good closeup of the riders in PAIN. Stop the video and see the anguish on Voigt, Levy, and all that pass!
I rode to the flagstaff road finish west of Boulder today, coming in from the west. I had to climb a big hill, & I mean big hill twice.... once going up to the ride and once after the finish (as the finish was way down on the hill on the other side. I did 11.34 miles in 1:14.... that is not flat, I was climbing standing with a 34/28 for long periods, but I made it.
From boulder they are saying you need wrist bands, don't know how they are going to enforce that on 5000 people. Ha, a girl asked me if I had one as I rode into the turnoff area for the final climb, I said no & just kept riding. She didn't run after me, I was only going 3 mph as the place was full of people. I found a spot on the hill, about 100yds uphill from the guy that wears the V green thong, Borant??? Luckily he did not come any closer. There were still a bunch of lunies around me, but they stayed mostly on the other side. I think I got some very good video today.

8/24/2012
ROAD BIKE DAY: See the video for the start, short clip.
I rode to the start in Breckinridge, I was 50 min late for the sign in, but I saw the start. No rain today.
Voigt rules, he was out front all day!!!!!
I am going to be optomistic I think and take my road bike tomorrow, flagstaff road is paved all the way to 77, which I will be coming up. If they block me, I'll come dn on 72 and into boulder on 93.

At the SwanMtCampground (in Dillon) I watched a white tailed fox get his lunch at the dumpster (he caught a chipmunk) and make off across the field.

For tomorrw (Saturday), right now the plan is to leave the trailer here at the campsite & take a bike & van, turn north at Idaho Springs (?) and heading to Nederland area & taking the flagstaff road into the finish area & being at the finish or close as possible. After the race is over, I'll be decending into Boulder to visit some bike shops (I hope they will be open).
Yesterday I rode up Independence pass & ran into Bob & Maggie Formals from CW. I had a great decent, that is the most fun I have had on the bike coming down from the top there, and last year too! But this year, NO RAIN!

8/23/2012
ROAD BIKE DAY: See the video, a short clip of Voigt hammering it home!
I thought about it a while & decided doing Vail Pass twice in the same day was not such a good idea... and that was a good idea. I decided to drive up to the summit & ride into BeaverCreek finish, then ride up the pass from the Vail side. We are in CO & I ended up riding through 3 rain showers & it was raining heavy from the summit down to the campsite on my return, luckily I was in my van!
The finish at BeaverCreek was good, the weather was clear & nice. Riding up to Vail Pass Summit from Beaver Creek is a workout as it is all up hill. About 1/2 the way up I as a couple of guys riding down if it is raining at the summit, as it looked like it & they said yes. There were only a few riders out at this time as it was getting late. About 2/3 the way up, near where the bike lane joins highway 70, I stopped to reinstall my leg warmers as it was cooling off & spitting & I never ever want my legs to get cold. Anyway, 2 riders swing by going up the hill, they were riding a little slow & I was trying to get my warmers on. When I looked up, it looked like the same guys that were heading down & I yelled at them, they were far away and one said something about Vail. Anyway I got my duty done and headed up the hill again & was riding about twice as fast as them so I was closing in from about 200 yds back. About when I caught them, the first one has fell over in the path & we all stop. They said they are heading to Vail, I told them "your going back up the summit to Dillon!", they have no idea how they got turned around, they were confused when they hit the road at the finish of last years timetrial and started back up the hill. I helped with directions and got them pointed back downhill & in the big chainring. When I got to the summit, it was raining, but my work was done.

When I was coming down off the hill, the Garmin team passed me & I was riding behind Levi & others while they were returning to the hotel. I got to see George, Basso, & Evans clearly as they passed within 3 feet.

TRAVEL DAY:
Left St Elmo's early anticipating a moto ride before leaving for the summit @ Independence Pass. Decided to not put myself under a bunch of time constraints, so I just stopped at the turn off to the pass & took a couple hour break. Had a sandwich just before leaving... maybe that was a mistake. Saw Bob & Maggie F from CW at the top, that was a surprize. The crazy people at the top were weird and would not let the bikers through without a joining their big party, several riders almost wrecked as people were trying to go up to the KOM and then return for a spot on the hill.
The decent is one of the most fun rides I have, as you form a little group and we kept pushing the pace. My average on the decent was 21.7 (which includes a lot of slow going at the top stuck behind cars, etc. and some flat or uphill sections at the bottom.). My pace up was 10.3, a little slower than last year.... tuna sandwich?? also been riding my moto mostly so not really bike training.
My legs are a little iffy... road rash on the left knee from a little episode at a restroom on Mesa Verde, left knee tendon acting up, right knee twitchy from being twisted on under the rear tire on the moto... was thinking that that incident could have bothered my left knee as it was stuck up by the front wheel, that was just crazy.
Moved the vehicle to a campsite on a lake at the base of the climb on my return to the bottom. Contemplating doing the climb again tomorrow earrly!!!! for them coming from Aspen (only about 12 miles on their side, 23 on mine).

TRAVEL DAY:
PRO BIKE CHALLENGE START in Durango.
I am in Montrose headed for Gunnison. Got the road bike out last night, waxed it up, and got suited up this morning to ride.... then found clouds & spitty rain from horizon to horizon. I was planning on riding to the start, but standing around in the wet & 65 degrees in bike cloths is not my idea of fun! Split for Gunnison.

MOTO DAY:VIDEO-SINGLETRACK
OK, today we did the Hermosa Creek Trail on the moto. Mostly single track, medium difficulty, there were a couple of sections that were A- (mostly due to impending dropoffs if you go off trail or as you work your way between a big rock and impending doom), but I made them. Ran into some horsers that had lost their pack horses and were trying to walk out with big packs. They were 6 miles from their truck (which was at upper hermosa trail head), but I could not help them much. The trail was too rocky to take one 2 up to the truck, I am not that good. When I got to the trail head, the horses were there waiting to be put in the truck, hehe. It was early so they had time to get out before the days end.
I got back to the campsite, took a shower, and took the moto to town. Had an hour lunch at Wendy's and then found out the library was closed. I went by and visited with Sharon & Vince on my way back to camp. They had a lot of motorcycle travelers today.
At the campsite I cleaned up the Time for the big start tomorrow in Durango, finished putting my computer on the bike, and loaded to the trailer in anticipation for pulling out tomorrow.

There are a lot of moto/MBikers in this area. Some here for the race I assume.

ROAD BIKE DAY:
Got up at dawn, quick breakfast & off to the Chapin Mesa Museum & Spruce Top House from the campsite. A lot of elevation change, not much traffic. Fell at the restrooms at the museum, got confused by all the kids running around. Met another rider on the way back to camp from Oregon. Also discovered my computer mount was broken when I fell. He was headed for dolores. Had a quick shower and off to Durango.
The views from the Mesa are nice, you can see the whole valley from dolores to durango. The info on the anastozie's indians is facinating and the cliff dwellings are very well preserved and numberous. I left a lot more to do there.
In durango, went to 2 of the biggest bike shops in town. Everyone was getting ready for the race. Inquired about a new wheel for my 7 & picked up a speedo for the Time. Found I had a text message from Sharon (of CW) when I turned my phone on in Durango, they were there. So I stopped by their campsite @ United north of town on my way to Hermosa Campgrounds for 45 min chat. They were thinking of heading over to the Lizardhead climb on Monday for the race. I had just came from that area & am not headed back. They will be in Gunnison for the race through the next day on the way to Crested Butte & for the start the next day in Gunnison. I may hook up with them there as I am headed for east of Gunnison right after the race starts on monday.

TRAVEL DAY:
Broke camp and headed to the MBike area in Dolores, it looked good, medium diff on normal high desert terrain. Found a good road bike road on the way there. Had lunch at Mr. Happy's BBQ bar/dinner/bakery. Good burger, fries were greeeesy! Drove right by Phil Woods MBike Heaven, looked good, but way to HOT to even consider getting the MBike out. On to Mesa Verde, I could see the range, hoping that the higher elevation would bring cooler air. They have a lot of trailer restrictions, so if pulling a trailer, think about that. Set up camp & after a while it really cooled off when it started raining & hailing.... for about 45 minutes. Then a nice evening.

8/16/2012
ROAD BIKE DAY:
Today was road bike day, left the Mavreeso Campground and rode to Dolores, out/back. Weather was good, it felt good to loosen up the legs and work the stiffness from yesterday's adventure out. Returned for Pizza in Dolores after the ride. Worked on trip planning for the reminder of the stay till the start of the ProRace in Durango. To much stuff to do and not enough time.
I got a campground pass, $10 lifetime for 1/2 price camping fees at campgrounds.

I am trying to find out about blogging www sites, I need more technical assistance.... stay tuned.

MOTO DAY:PICTURES/MOTO SINGLE TRACK
The plan was not to do single track....and to finish up at Groundhog Reservoir for lunch. As it turns out, the plan did not go well. I tried to find the easy way up to Stoney Mesa, but i could not find the trail in Stoner, so went on further east to Taylor Creek and went north there... when I got on top, all the roads were dead ends and did not connect with Stoner Mesa, so back down to try again. I did not have the map, only my Garmin which is not good for looking at the big picture, so back to camp to get... drink of tea, gas (since I already did 50 miles), map, and batteries for the video camera. Talked with the camp host and he told me where the trailhead for the StonerMesaST was..... the plan was thrown out the window.
On to the single track, thinking if it was bad I would bail.... Well it was not too tough, until I stalled the bike next to a big tree along the trail, I could not touch the ground and the bike was gone, over the side, saddle down the hill, to say hill is not justice, it was major upside down, with the wheels somewhat close to the trail, but the handlbars, tank, engine, were definitely over the rim of the trail. It took me an hour just to get the bike back up on the trail as the footing, rocks, thicket was very difficult. Finally I got the bike up the trail and tettering on the big tree trunk in the trail & I heard moto's coming, thank you. In rolled 8 KTM"S mostly. The leader was some big dude with arms the size of my legs. He volunteered to get my bike up and rode it up the trail about 50 yds so the others could get by... it was a narrow trail. I was so drained from struggling, that I don't know if I could have lifted it without waiting another hour to recover, we are at about 10000 ft you know.
Anyway they are gone, it takes me another 15 min to repack the bag, check the gas (I was surprised not much drained out even though I was watching it leak out the tank the whole time, the shutoff was inaccessible as it was on the side of the bike that was pinned to the hill. I took my time & tried to get my confidence back, but it was gone. I ran into some other motoheads going back down the way I came up. We talked a bit & I wished them a good day. No way would I ride down that trail, too many very steep switchbacks, I had to drive up the hill and lift the front wheel around the other direction to get it turned.... but I am not an A rider.
With my confidence gone, I dumped it going down off the otherside almost twisting my right knee as it was pinned under the rear wheel and my left foot was way up by the front wheel infront of the radiators, don't ask how that happened, but the bike was laying on my right foot, pinned. It took me several attempts, but I finally managed to get my left leg/foot back and over the seat, so I could take the pressure off my knee, still pinned on the ground (of course we are on the side of big hill with rocks, roots, etc.). I took the rear bag off the bike allowing me to to pull my foot out, not such an easy feat considering I was facing forward, pinned under the bike. I walked the bike down the hill, engine off, in gear using the rear wheel as the main brake & feathering the front brake as required to maneuver around all the rocks, roots, etc.
Finally made it back to camp, had a IndiaPaleAle and stretched my body on the picnic table for 30 minutes before I could get the energy to take a shower.
After the shower, time to think about food. The dude from florida was at the water ****ett the same time and offered me some fresh trout, he could not eat, whew, what a meal, I made some cole slaw and chowed down. Overall a very tiring day, with a fresh trout meal to close it out.
Thank God I made it back, tomorrow it will be a road ride pedal bike day..... If my back is not out from pushing on the moto & my knee is not out from being twisted/pinned under the bike. I hate to say it, but someone is looking after me.... & I am still kicking.
Oh yea, what beautiful country, see the pictures/video.

MBike DAY: PICTURES
Today rode Mbike up Priest Gulch Trail, near Stoner, CO. Bike computer fell off and reset to KM as I started. 1:45 into the trail I decided to take a break. Trail has been mostly up, trail about 1 foot wide in most places with banked sides, and quite a few big rock gardens. I figure 15 min @ 6mph (riding) & 1:30 min @ 2mph (pushing), I am 4.5 miles into trail. Looking at the map during the granola break, I see the connecting trail back to the van is at 11.7 miles. I look at the computer, 7.6; great I am 4 miles from the connector which should be mostly down hill since I have been generally going up forever. Get on the bike and start rolling up the hill again, 100 more yds & I think I am beat, wait, the computer is in KM, I have 6 more miles togo just to make the connector..... I am done. Turn around and start down. The trail is so narrow, I can let it roll, and there are rocks.... something is wrong, this thing is handling weird when I hit the brakes. Stop, check that the wheels are tight in the dropouts front & rear, back on the trail. Every time I hit the breaks it starts getting real wishy washy handling. Look down, my front tire is almost flat! Out with the canisters, be faster than pumping it up. Use about half and I am on my way. Once I let it go and got up to about 16mph, climbed the side of the trail (remember it is only 6" wide?) and almost hit a big boulder..... the rest of the way kept it under 6mph, but that does not help too much, it is too slow to really control the bike very good. Anyway, with all the 1st gear up and 6 mph down I really practiced my tech skills with the 6" wide track.
Got back to the campsite, stretched, dinner, new jet in the Kawa for tomorrow, shower, and ready for an early turnin.

8/13/2012
MOTO DAY: PICTURES/VIDEO
Moved the van/trailer from the street in Telluride to a Mbike Trailhead (no parking over 2 hrs 8am-8pm), they don't have much parking anywhere in town. Unloaded the Kawa, suited up and headed to Ouray, via Imogene Pass. In Ouray headed south to the trail to Engineer's Pass and headed up hill. Met some other Riders at the top coming from Lake City on 650KLR & some Yama, then headed back. Got gas in Ouray, just south of the hot springs, it was a nice day there and was considering lunch, but I still have the a pass to cross & was worried about the weather if it starts raining all evening. My fears were well founded as I neared the top of Imogene, I stopped and put my rainjacket on, allowing 3 ATV's to move in front of me for the final wall crossing to the summit, I waited in the rain till they were almost across. I was really worried about lightning, but thank god there was none around. Scooted over to the summit, and it was raining on the Telluride side, so I did not daly & started directly down. Near the bottom, lightning was striking, but it was up on the mountain by that time about 5 miles west of the summit.
I loaded up, moved to another overlook for lunch out of the camper as the Mbike Trailhead was right out of town on the major highway & the vehicle noise was terrible. Another guy was loading up his road bike, it was a SEVEN, coupled just like mine. He was giving some bike traveler with panner's a ride somewhere, as they both had had enough of the rain too!
After lunch headed down the road to Dolores/Rico area, & found a campground just south of Stoner up a pass with 3 state campgrounds.

8/12/2012
MOTO DAY:
Got up and had breakfast & wi-fi at McD's across from my Walmart campground, hehe.
Went up north of town to Gunnison Gorge National Conservatory, OHV riding area. Big hills, like out in the desert, it was hot. did a big loop, and headed back to the trailer, I was dirty, dusty & hot. Had a shower in the trailhead parking lot, there was only 2 other guys parking in the south TH. Loaded up and headed out of town, Montrose was too hot for me, maybe closer to winter, but the riding was zero scenery, bunches of woops, huge dusty hills, and dusty ravines.

8/11/2012
MOTO DAY: SEE “8-11-12-AlderStockDriveway with Thad”.. sightseeing
Got up and headed out on the Kawa with Thad to explore Alder Stock Driveway which is legal about 100' wide through the LaGaritaWilderness. It had rained the night before and it was pretty muddy in some sections, jeeps were stopped questioning whether to turn back or press on. There were campers at the trail head where hiking only on through the wilderness. Explored the area a little further east and came out on 149 near South Fork. It was mid afternoon when we returned. I had lunch, wished Thad a safe trip, loaded up and headed out for Montrose. About in Gunnison, it started to rain. I did not see any good pulloff camping areas, so I continued on into Montrose. It looked like the rains did not grace Montrose, as it was hot & dusty. I had dinner out @ Applebe's & camped out in Walmart.

8/10/2012
MOTO DAY: See previous video.
Got up and headed out on the Kawa with Thad to Rat Creek and up to the continental divide. Rode a few trails on the way back to camp. I went into town for dinner at the Mexican Cantina & checked my www presence.

8/9/2012
MOTO DAY: SEE "8-9-12-Creede-Hell Ride Through Town, Camp, & RatCreek".... mostly sight seeing.
Ride Through TownGot up and headed out on the Kawa with Thad. We went up Miners Creek Road, this trail supposedly ends up being 787 which skirts the continental divide, just outside the wilderness. Thad did not want to do any creek crossings so he wanted out, supposedly this trail crosses the same creek several times. So I turned back, we met a lady at the TH, she said to head up to Rat Creek. We headed into town, Thad & I got separated. I ended up going north out of town to the mine area, RAINS came, I headed back to camp. Thad showed up about 10 min later, he had done the same route as me, but was ahead of me.

8/8/2012
Moved camp to Creede with Thad from the RMAR ride, we found a great free spot just west out of town 8 miles, right on the Rio Grande.

Darren, glad to see you made it back in one piece. I see you experienced some of that Rico area singletrack. Some of that stuff is more than I want to play on. I was trying to figure out your Stoner Mesa ride description. Were you looking for it from the bottom off of the paved road where those campgrounds are, or were you trying to access the trail off of the dirt road that goes up on top of the mesa? I've only done it from the top, and even then a huge lightning storm made me turn around just before the downhill section started. If what I've seen in pics and videos is correct, that's the hardest part...and maybe better done downhill.

I'm glad you got to do that big Tincup/Hancock loop area. That's some good riding in there. Hey!...I see that your hatred for equestrians manifested itself again on the Hermosa Creek trail. What do you have against those poor horse people...LOL! You know what I'm referring to, don't you.

Darren, I'm a little disturbed by your mention of getting skinned knees in a restroom at Mesa Verde. Maybe that was a little too much information...LOL! It sounds like you spent the night in that WalMart parking lot where we got groceries when we moved camped over to the Lake City side of the mountains. Sounds like a hot place to sleep.

On campsites, aren't those great campsites between Rico and Dolores? I usually just stay in a free area right by the Dolores river just south of Rico, but I've stayed at Mavreeso too...pretty good place for a fee camping area for sure.

On your campsite near La Manga Pass, was it the one where the old, vacant Airstream-looking trailer was parked by that cattle corral? I camped there for 3 nights on the way back home. My Roosevelt forest map was really useful in that area, and I'm going to go back to that area to ride some more.

Good stuff and plenty of pics. I'm having trouble getting the vids to flow smoothly, but maybe that's my computer or something.

TNC,
I went up the south end of StonerMesa, it was not terribly difficult although I had a problem. It is a very narrow trail in places and the switchbacks are tight, I find going up these easier than down.
The horsey people & me got along fine. I wasn't around when their horses took off, hehe.
Mavreeso is great & they have elec.
@ La Manga pass I stayed the first pulloff at the very top, about 500 yds from the summit, down in the gulley drive as far north as possible.
You will have better luck downloading the video's then watching them, I don't know how fast that www.dropbox site is for streaming video. That is what I always do, but i am on directional wireless from the top of the mountain.

You gotta wait a few seconds for the video to download before you hit play. Give it a good headstart. Looks like a great time. Thanks for sharing. If you still want to put it all in a blog... blogger.com is an easy free one.

Darren, because of riding with you and your bike having a pumper carb, I researched the mod in great detail when I got home. I now have a TM36 pumper carb on the KLX, and it's great. I'll send you the bill. What was your address again?...LOL!

TNC, your gas mileage is going to HeiL!

Blogspot sucks, only people that can see it are if you join. If you join, they can use anything you post there for anything they want. And it is complicated, always wanting you to link all your accounts, etc. no thanks! ...er maybe blogger.com is different, but it is done now... maybe next time.
