I installed standard cast motion pro rim locks in the OEM rim holes this weekend and it created a terrible out of balance condition. One lock in each wheel as normal.

So I needed to add weight to the opposite side of the rim. To do this I could have weighed the rim-locks to find out hom much lead I need but I didn't. Well, I do not want to remount tires so I did some research and found the following info.

1.6" - 2.5 oz
1.85" - 3oz
2.15" - 4 oz
2.5" - 4.5 oz

The 2009 KLX250s uses a 1.6" and 2.15" rim lock. So you need to add 2.5oz to the front and 4 oz to the rear. The standard Mr. Gasket brand tape weight package come with 4-2 oz strips that are just wide enough to fit on the rear rim so that is easy, add two strips. The front rim is too narrow to lay the strips along the rim so you have to cut the strips and bend them to fit the spoke hump across the rim.

Sure, you can try and find a balance stand to do a better job but this will get you close. Spoke weights are very expensive and remind me of kid bicycles with lame streamers.

Next time I remove the tire I could possibly weight the inside of the rim.

 

FYI, the Rockymountainatv.com "Tusk" brand front rimlock also weighs 2.5 oz according to my postal scale.

I've had the stick-on weights on my rims for like 2.5yrs now, and they haven't come off surprisingly. And I've been through some crap

The key is to make sure the spot you're putting them on is absolutely clean - use rubbing alcohol and a clean cloth, just get it clean and dry.

 

Good post. Put rimlocks on too a couple weeks ago and they're very noticeable. Time to get some weights.

 

Of course, the tires might be heavier on one side or the valve stem location may also be a factor causing a +/- situation with the lead but you've got to start somewhere.
