maintenence question

my klx is an 07 and the oil was changed right before i bought it with exactly 2000 miles on it. well ive put about 400 on it since then and im sure im about due for an oil change but i was just wondering how often most of you go before changing the oil and what weight/brand do you guys run and why?

Brieninsac 06-11-2012 02:05 AM

I believe your next interval would be 3,750 followed by 7,500. I use a SAE 10W-40. I think any major brand is fine.

I am crazy and do like 500 -750 miles for oil and filter every other. I just did oil and filter this morning.

I am not saying to do this I am just saying that is what I do.

I use Rotella 15W-40. It is a heavy duty oil that a lot folks use in bike of all kinds. It a bit expensive at about $13.xx/gallon

i change mine about every 1500-2000. I ride the poor KLX pretty hard though.

On my ninja i go about 3-4K between changes. 15w-40 Rotella always.

You're gonna get so many answers, your head's gonna spin.:p I do oil and filter change every 4,000Km and use Motul 3000 20w50.:)

MaverickAus 06-11-2012 09:21 AM

1,000 km or 6 months

Klxrelic 06-11-2012 09:54 AM

Oil change every 3000 kms. Just regular old 10w30 Dino oil. Filter every 12,000 kms. Also note that I'll soon have 40,000 kms on mine. :)

Oil change every 500-700 miles for me. I will only use oil with a JASO MA, MA1, or MA2 rating.

rgoers 06-11-2012 05:11 PM

First few changes were at 80, 800, and 2000. From here on, I will be changing every 2000-3000, or annually, whichever comes first.

2009 klx250sf....

i just check the oil daily...i'm usually running at around 8,000 rpm daily on the highways for commuting...after about 3,000 miles, the oil level starts getting closer to the bottom line....i just stick to 3,000 mile oil changes (about 3 months of riding for me)....currently using semi-synthetic yamalube 10w40...if you changed your oil at 2,000, why would you think you need an oil change soon after 400 miles?

8,600 miles - valves were out of spec and required new shims (valve adjustment)

8,000 miles - i should have replaced my rear tire, but now i have 9,300 miles and my rear tire is past the wear indicator....made an appointment tomorrow....

looking at the chain and sprockets, i think the 15t and 39t rear will last 20,000+ miles....

There's so many different opinions on this. Mine is long as you are being reasonable in the type of oil you are using & the frequency you are changing it (ie you are not changing with cooking oil every 50,000 miles) it's going to be pretty hard to hurt an engine with 'incorrect' oil change philosophy. Follow the manufacturers recommendations and if you sleep better at night by exceeding them, do it!

i didnt change it at 2000 the previous owner did, that was right before i bought it. i was only asking because with my other dirtbikes and quads which are always ridden very hard i change the oil in them almost every other ride or every 3 rides. i figured i would still be alright having only put 400 miles on it but id rather be safe then sorry with this bike.

thanx for the input everyone ive gotten enough answers to figure out that im just gonna come up with my own schedule for changing the oil because my head is ready to spin from all these answers :p

the klx manual calls for oil change after every 7,500 miles...this is a pretty low maintenance motorcycle and not a race engine...you don't have to change that frequently...

Well I know I don't need to change it every other ride, but 7,500 miles seems to be a lot in between changes. I don't think I'll ever go that long
