I'm learning as I go. After twice melting part of a backpack because it hit the exhaust, and doing the same thing with bungees that hit the exhaust (ones that are adjustable) i'm getting my system down. I found some nite ize products that work very well for securing odd shaped smaller stuff. Gear Tie | Nite Ize

i use those for things that are too small for the net, or to secure the net to the rack when I'm not carrying a large load but still want the net available.

Sticking with the backpack I have for now. Over the winter I'm going to look at a way to attach some plates or pieces to the side, hanging below the seat/existing luggage rack area, or swap the existing one for one that incorporates that so I can use pelican cases or ammo cans. As it is now, I wouldn't have enough space for both something attached and my backpack secured. So far the bungee net seems to be working well.

Just got my Wolfman E-10 Saddle bags installed. I absolutely love them! They hold a lot more than I expected they would, and there's nothing sticking up above seat height for my feet to get caught on. Might not be the best solution for on-campus. The zipper pulls are large enough to throw a small padlock through to keep the honest thiefs honest. They (the not-so-honest thiefs) could always just take the bags off, but it would take some time to do that if you weave the ends of the strapping back through the strap buckles like I did.

 

I think I only took my Pelican box off once 4 years ago when I went to Canada. Other than that its bolted permanently. No reason to ever take it off.
