I replaced the rear sprocket with a JT 45 tooth. I also replaced the chain with an RK 520XSO. I ordered a 110 link chain, but ended up removing 2 links. I believe the stock chain is 106 links, and will be too short. It gave me the low end I wanted, without sacrificing the top end. Easier on the clutch when starting out, too. The chain came from Pitposse, and the sprocket from Motorcycle Superstore.

I have asked this same question before about sprockets and from what I understand is that you can't have it both ways. You can't have better top end speed and increase your low end torque at the same time. It's either one or the other, is it not? P.S. Still waiting for my big gun, damnit.

sometimes lowering the gear ratio actually opens up the top end by dropping the engine into a better powerband for those speeds.

On a 100HP sportbike, changing the gearing will limit your top speed, does not affect the KLX at all with stock displacement. YOU WILL NOT BE LIMITED BY GEARING! Unless you get to a ratio more than 13/45 or 14/48, beyond that yes you will be revving quite high at 70+. Stock gearing on the KLX has the "potential" to hit 100mph, but unless you are on a downgrade or have a nice tail wind forget it. The best I could manage to hold steady was 75 all stock, with the 13 tooth I could hold 80-85 at around 3/4 throttle.

If i just go to a 13 would i have problems?
Hey Will, since the dropping the 13 or raising the 42 to a 45 is approx the same, I would change the back one. This will keep some sprocket noise down and probable some wear down, (this has been debated to death) And if you want some sort of in between choice, you can always leave the 14 on front and go up to say a 47 on the rear.
While I agree with deej about the noise and some wear, buying a 13 tooth sprocket is a lot cheaper than going the rear sprocket route. That way you dont have to buy a new chain, and the front sprocket is about 20-40 dollars cheaper (depending on what rear you would be looking at) than any of the rears. Your lookin at 15 dollars compared to maybe $90-100ish for the same gear ratio. JMO...

Oh yea I forgot about needing a different chain......maybe trying the 13 on the front (which I did first) will allow you to see the difference without having to invest too much money. Good point Dirt Beaver. Speaking of chains, mine looks like something that was on the Titanic, I gotta detail the bike this weekend. A good wash, maybe an oil change, soak the chain, wash and a wax and put the stock turns back on. Sounds like a plan.

get some tc-11 - awesome lube that disolves rust (even removed oxidation from headlight lenses), doesn't harm paint, and is proven to prevent rust far better than any other lube.

http://tc-11.com/

can get it from ace-hardware also

So puting that 13tooth front sprocket on will help my top end, for the highway riding, and still allow me to climb the canyons here at 5000 to 9000 feet with out having to get off and push or keeping my tachometer redlined. Dacoontz.
