Default box

Why not remove the box completely and run a bolt on filter right off carb?

Too much heat from the exhaust, engine, and radiator would get sucked in IMO.

I disagree, run a pod filter off the left or right side, sticking slightly outside the frame, and you will get nothing but cooler air at speed

A year or so ago I measured a 6F degree temp difference using an indoor/outdoor thermometer something like this comparing ambient temp vs temp inside the air box of my air cooled XR200 under load "at speed".

My Kaw gets much much hotter in and around the frame than the XR

I think the only side for an angled neck filter is the right side which would be directly above the exhaust.

Mototune man has a page about the 10hp loss you get when removing the heat shield on 4 cyl bikes allowing radiator heat to toast everything behind it.

Bad enough the metal gas tank turns into a mini oven sitting directly above the hot engine.

Default heat

Woud be interesting to see what temps the 250 run. I run pod on mine too and have raced for several years running pod types (K&N-UNI) and never had any problems but never gave it a second thought tho, because that is what we always ran.
