Default KLX300 Tuning Project

So I am new to the KLX300. I wanted another dirt bike for leisure trail rides and to stay in shape a bit. I spend most of my summers on my Aprilia RS660 racing and this gives me some fun time and gets me back in the dirt. I have been riding since 1973, I have owned just about every brand of dirt bike and raced most of them in MX and Hare Scrambles. I am also afflicted with the modification disease. Now comes my current obsession the 2025 KLX300. After a bit of research I learned, from the factory the KLX 300 is very tame. It will never be a super power house, but for the new MSRP of $5449 how can you pass it up. I immediately noticed that DynoJet does not have a power commander for it and only makes a fuel controller. I thought that was odd and contacted a good friend of mine, and Motorcycle Tuner Rob, of Robs Dyno Service. Rob has been tuning bikes for over 20 years, he is well known as the guy who cracked the Polaris / Indian ECU's back in the day. He has tuned my Harleys and also sponsors my Road racing. So long story short we have embarked on a quest to be able to tune a KLX300. We hit our first hiccup when he reached out to Woolich for a tune pack. The KLX300 is not supported and the request was forwarded to the development team to see if there are enough requests for them to develop a tune pack. My guess there will never be enough requests. Now Rob has many other avenues to explore but it all boils down to time and money. I am still hopeful that a tuning solution can be found as BDSB has been able to falsh the KLX300 ECU. I also read Driller212's review of that flash and he seems happy enough with it. If you would like to watch a short video and chat with Rob here is the link to my YouTube channel.
..

So lets see where this goes !

I did the same research on Woolich to see if they supported the FI KLX's. Being able to adjust A/F ratio's at all throttle settings and optimizing ignition timing for the combination is a Godsend on modern bikes.
It becomes even more critical when ride-by-wire throttle is equipped. Most bikes are tuned to meet noise and emission limits for their market. That doesn't equal the best running engine, so to have it perform properly, it needs some tweaks. The add-on tuners don't have the ability to adjust the base tune, they can only add or subtract fuel for broad rpm settings. That's all we had before being able to alter the base maps in the ECM.

Did not know about Rob's involvement with the ME17 - I did watch/monitor DynoJet's slow discovery and roll-out of tables for use with their PVCX ( later PV3, now PV4)..

If Woolich would offer a software package for the KLX at a reasonable price ( that considers the bike's market positioning/selling price), I think it would sell well.

Rob is one of those guys that is under the radar. His customer support is unbelievable, and as a tuner, he has people from all over the world bring bikes to him for tuning. He is also a very good close friend. When I broke my back in 2023 at a race in GA, he offered to fly down and drive my rig back home. Now thats a true friend.

I dont think a lot of people are willing to spend the $500 to $750 price for a full dyno tune on a KLX, but I may be underestimating the market. I would love to know how BDSB has been able to do the ECU flashes. His target is the dirt bike community and uses a different tuner software. I couldn't find a single dirt bike model that Woolich supports. I would love to have the curve that BDSB has. I dont care about max HP. The gains he shows low to mid range are pretty nice and right where I would like the gains.
I was also surprised that most folks purchasing the KLX300 have an average of 20 years riding experience, cant remember where I saw that, but I guess all us old farts wanting to get out and do some leisure trail riding is on the rise LOL ..

Well maybe we will get more info this coming week. I know he wont let this go easily as he loves a challenge.

This would make a great Christmas present!!!
I would really like a tunable ECM for a big bore kit.
I mean I love the bike the way it is but I hate to leave anything on the table if its not to hard to get.

Thanks for sharing what you know.
and thanks KLXSTER for your input on these matters.

Hey Craig. Nice to see you here - this forum much more appropriate place to discuss such R&D compared to the Facebook.

Why then not just to send ECU to BDSB?

Cheers, Dmitry
