I just bought a klx250sf in april. Did the mototune break-in. Now, this is my first bike, when I got it, I thought it was pretty darn quick. I read alot of threads titled "klx250 underpowered?" And bought it anyways. Im glad I did. Underpowered isn't really a good way to describe it, OVERLY restricted is what I would call it. I did the dyno-jet stage 2, full big gun exhaust system, and the bike is way faster than I am now. I had it doing 88mph indicated yesterday on the interstate. 88mph is NOT that fast, but the way the bike turns, leans, handles, stoppies, and wheelies, is rediculous. I have one friend that bought a drz400sm, and one with a wr250x supermoto, to me, their too tall, and too top heavy.

I love my bike and I don't think it's underpowered for what I use it for. Riding around my property I can pull in the clutch, rev it up and let the clutch fly like my old 2 stroke and tear a rut 2-3 inches deep and about 15 feet long. My old 85 cr125 would do little more but not much. The only complaint I have is it's very hard to maintain speed in 6th gear even with the slightest amount of wind. I hope a big bore will cure this problem. Just because I said it's not underpowered does not mean I don't want more. I'm ready to start modding the bike!

For its size (249 cc) it is about average for power. I think it is around 18 HP stock, about the same as my riding lawmower.

I've had a couple dozen bikes over the years and have seen titles with all kinds of mistakes.

Just for comparison, my stock XR650L had a measured max HP of about 27hp. There's no way a stock 250cc four stroke is the same as that.

Start with a dyno-jet kit and exhaust. I had the exact same problem. Re jet and exhaust and now I can use 6th in town!!! Seriously my bike hardly leaves 6th gear unless traffic is stop and go.

Same as my mower too but the mower is 499cc and governed to 3600rpm.

Oh yes, and my tractor weighs 4500lbs and is only 30HP. It is something like 1300cc and HP peak at 2700rpm.

HP is all state of mind after a MOTO-PRO suspension add to my bike I got way faster off road - its not always about power but how smooth and comfortable are you.

power is why I got a new s1000rr
