Default KLX250H, Waste of my time???

Hey,

Im living in Australia and have brought a new 07KLX250H (i have only racked up 700kms). This bike has been alot of fun.... but not living up to my expectations of a 250. This Aussie model sounds more like a lawn mower then a realthumper should. Considering its a H model, im not sure if i can trust the 'free mods'. The bike also lacks top end speed, max speed is about 110km/h and if i get hit with any wind, it drops down to 95km/h. The bike is hard to start although its in very warm conditions in Australia. I need to use the choke every time, which revs the bike up to 5000rpm just with choke.......

I think i have major air/fuel mixture problems, But apart from the idle screw, i cant find any other adjustments around the carbie. Any suggestions at all??

And a note to Kawasaki -Your screwing all your bikes with your new 'eco-friendly' changes...[X(]
Starting to wish i brought a Yamaha..... [:@]

G'day Fitzy
I guess it depends on your bank balance and your idea of what a 250 is. If you can afford another 4 - 5 grand over the price of the KLX and you want what most people want (an enduro bike) then yes you should have bought a Yamaha. What you have got is a solid, reliable TRAIL bike which can be fairly easily "woken up" with a few mods and you will still have 3 grand (or more) left over from the price of the Yamie.
If you want an enduro bike than I suggest you sell the KLX and get the WR, or put a bit of time and money into the KLX and go enjoy yourself.
Good luck with whatever you do.

First of all welcome to the site, and don't' get discouraged too soon. As far as the choke goes, it doesn't matter where you live, if the bike has been sitting for more than a hour since your last ride you have to use the choke. I don't know of a bike that is the exception. If you want to wake this bike up, be prepared to spend $500.00 minimum. New pipe, jetting and sprocket changes. As far as the adjustments on the carb, you only need to set the idle after its warmed up, and then don't mess with it again. 5000 rpm's is what the bike runs with the choke on, I usually run mine for 30 to 60 seconds, then hit the gas and push the choke in. Again welcome to the site.

Thanks for the welcome, this really is one good site.

The bike is a great bike, im just alittle disapointed atm, im sure with abit more running in, the bike will improve.

I intend on putting in some money on the bike, a exhaust is a must. But for the moment, ill need to get about 1000kms before that. Im just wondering about the free mods though..... Its a KLX250H, the exhaust is a complete weld, its impossiable to remove buttpug/baffle without a re-weld. (in other words, not worth it). Can anyone with the same model, or any Aussies help?? Can i trust the free mods?

Cheers!

Alright, thanks for the info.

Can anyone suggest the best way to improve top end power into this bike? I would like to ride this bike to work a few times a week, but i will need to travel alittleon a 100 zone to get there. The bike handles 100 well, but i want to treat the bike well (lower the revs yeah?). Im looking into rear sprockets atm. Any other suggestions?

cheers!

G'day Fitzy,

if you want to lower the revs at 100k you will need a lot more engine power. Marty (used to be on here) fitted a 331cc kit, pumper carb, yoshi cams, hmf exhaust and lots of other mods and his now pulls the stock gearing with authority. Most people here lower the gearing to get better performance which of course raises the revs at any given speed.

Cheers

The pix of the KLX250 on the Staintune website are of an older model but it's still green.

MaverickAus, thanks for your interest, your information is very good. But i think u need to hear my full story....annddd long story short

Ive always had an interest for trail bikes, and the KLX250 meets perfectly.I had the bike on a long straighton a soft dirt track today, hit 100 in no time and still handled great!. i didnt believe how well the bike felt at that speed. But for the mean time, im still on restriction, 250 restrictions for a year.

The plan is to keep this bike, but also buy a road bike.(cheap fuel for work and fun on the weekends) I just need to keep my undies on instead of trying to go fast on the klx. Like u said, most people down the gearing on the bike, not up. Im sure in a years time, i will be doing the same. yeah?
