Default KLX250H street legal???

Hey, new to the forum so hopefully i'm posting this in the right area, seem to have bad luck with these lol . So a while back I got a 2007 KLX250H, the whole time i've had it i thought it was an KLX250S, but today I had a friend look up the VIN and it came up as a 2007 KLX250H, just curios what exactly is the H model? Is it street Legal? (I live in NJ so laws are pretty strict to make a dirt bike street legal, if it says offroad use only on the title there is practically no chance of it becoming street legal.)

Your bike is the originally street legal model. It is an S model as are all of the KLX250 dual sports from 2006-2015. There wasn't an off road only model of the 250, only the 300.

Now with some previous knowledge from working in a dealership and a bit of quick research, along with a disclaimer (Disclaimer: I should be about 99% correct on this, but there may be some exceptions), here is "the rest of the story":

That letter is the specific generation designation for the dual sport model KLXs over the years. The general designation for all generations to date is the S. The early 1994-1996 off road model was KLX250R. The S simply was a general road legal dual sport designation, much like the SF was for supermoto and R was a general designation for off-road.

Your friend missed the next character in the VIN, which is the model year you have, the number after the H indicating the year should be a 7 (KLX250H7). When the new gen in 2009 came out the model became a T with the number being 9 (KLX250T9). When they did the 2009 model supermoto it became a KLX250W9.

Interesting point on that year designation is that it goes to a letter with the 2010 being the KLX250TAF, 2011 being the KLX250TBF. Keeps that character to a single character.

Kawasaki has done this for decades. 1970-1979, 1990-1999, and 2010-up were letters for the year. 1980-1989 and 2000-2009 were numbers for the year.

That letter and the next character on the VIN indicates the actual model for any parts differences. Here is a listing on Babbits Kawasaki.
  • Yours is actually a KLX250H7F,
  • the previous year is a KLX250H6F.
  • The 2009 KLX250S is a KLX250T9F
  • the 2010 KLX250S is a KLX250TAF
  • the 2011 KLX250S is a KLX250TBF
  • The 2007 KLX300R is a KLX300A7F
  • the supermoto 2009 KLX250SF is a KLX250W9F

So to sum it up, the weird letter is a designation of a "generation" of the basic design, the number/letter is the year. That initial letter is likely a semi-random pick by Kawasaki, making sure there is no conflict from other designations.

All the manufacturers have their systems, like Honda with the K, F, and C series among others. They start with zero regardless of year, like the 1969 Honda CB750K or K0, next year was K1, K2, etc. They also had the 750F series for the more sporting bikes and the C series when they did customs.

Now you know your bike is a street legal bike and you have information overload... but it may help some day, knowing about the model/date code.

Thanks Klx678, I was pretty sure it is street legal especially with all the stickers about safety and motor vehicle standards, I just wanted to make sure because this guy was trying to tell me it is not street legal, although from past experiences with him i could tell he doesn't know to much lol.
