I'm 41, in good health, 5'11" 180lbs. I've had several dirt bikes growing up from an XR75, CR80's, 125's, XR400, several sport 4wheelers and now a RZR 900 XP.

I've never ridden street but I've been wanting to do some dual sporting----70% dirt/30% street and little or no highway use.

My XR400 was a bit on the big side for me so I like the sze of the KLX but I'm a little concerned with it's power output.
Do you think I will get bored with the power?

Also, I was looking at 09 KLX's but came across a very low miliage 06. Are there any major differences in the years?

BTW my budget max is $3500

With that budget, you don't have much choice. If you want a inexpensive reliable machine, go for it. Other dirt bikes in this price point are probably going to need work.

The 09 has F Injection, the only real change. Put a 13T countershaft sprocket on the 06, maybe a pumper carb, it should be good.

 

for little to no highway use....13t front sprocket change and jetting...klx250s should feel pretty good for what you want to do...it'll feel a little small for your size...and, for that price range you can also get a used drz400s or used wr250r....will be bigger and fit you better....wr250r will be tougher to find used at a good price....

 

None of the KLX models in the US have fuel injection. EFI only comes in overseas models from '08 and up.

The big change on the '09 and newer (U.S. models) is the less suspension travel than the '06/'07 models; by default this means they also have a lower seat height. The '09 up U.S. models also have completely different plastics, tank, seat, etc.

 

OK, so I'm wrong.... again.

If you can find a good Drz400, that would have a little more power, but the dirt work suffers a little.

Maybe you could also get a .... diet.

 

The low mileage "06" sounds like a winner. the only thing better would be a low mileage "07" Quite a few people buy these bikes and then don't use them like they thought they would. You can find some good deals out there. Check the "06" out and if it hasn't been beat, start dickering with the guy.
