Yes, an individual can rebuild the KYB rear shock on our KLX without too much difficulty. In fact IMO I think it's easier to work on than the front fork...needs less special tools. And if you're just going to rebuild the rear, as in change oil and maybe replace the main seal, it's even easier. And unless you're doing a lot of consistent, gnarly, harsh, off road riding without any breaks where real heat buildup may occur, you don't even need nitrogen in the piggyback bladder. The repair manual walks you through the process quite clearly, so check it out. I didn't buy an special tools at all for the rear shock revalve I did on mine, but look at the manual to see if you have everything you need.

Why do you feel you need a rebuild?...blown seal?...or just time for an oil change? I'd recommend replacing the main seal if you're just needing an oil change, as it's easy to do once it's apart. I'd recommend staying with the KYB seal also.

What model KLX?

Like TNC said, it's not all that difficult. But, you will need a source of high pressure nitrogen or air, like 150 lb. If you do it, it would be a good time to also try revalving it.

If you decide to charge the shock bladder with air, you can use a convenient bicycle shock pump. They aren't expensive. There are different models with different gauges that can read all the way up to 300 psi, so they're very capable of servicing the bladder pressure. They also have a valve head that doesn't let air pressure drop in the bladder when you unscrew it. High end mountainbikes in particular have been using these pumps for their forks and shocks for years now, and they work excellently.

Don't worry about the Nitrogen, you're breathing air that is mostly Nitrogen anyway. Go with what TNC said. The bike shock pumps are nice and can be had cheap, you might have one already if you have a nice suspended mtn bike.
I need to re-valve front and rear. Nice to hear it's possible.

That is where i got my manuals from, They only show how to remove and fit a shock. not dismantle it.

Brewster,
I found it in the 1997 manual but it is not in the later one. Does anyone know if they are all the same, apart from the parts??

Thanks again guys,,
