Default KLX 351 Kit Install

Hey everyone, I figured I would make my own installation thread just to document the process. The kit should be arriving today so I plan on taking the bike to the shop to start stripping it down this afternoon/evening. I'm hoping to have it back together by Saturday afternoon. More to follow ...

Edit: Here are some pictures.

The work space

Stripping it down

Valve cover off

Forgot to take pictures ... cylinder off

351 vs stock

New piston in (yes I cleaned up the gasket surface and piston after ...)

Trying to get the piston in, I used big zip ties to compress the piston rings

Piston in

Head back on

Cams in

Timing marks lined up

Ready for the valve cover

And that's about it! She fired right up.

I went with Bill Blue's 351 kit. I have everything removed down to the valve cover so far, everything has come off smoothly. Next step is to align TDC mark. Pictures to follow.

I was debating on trying to do it my self but with it being sub 40s everyday and not having the patients off to the shop it went. Excited to follow your thread though.

Well, I ended up fishing it with the help of my mechanic friend/coworker (slow day at the shop). I will post pictures and a write up within a few days. It just put it through its first heat cycle, I'll do another and then ride it home nice and easy.

I made it home but something didn't feel right tuning wise starting around 5k rpm (didn't take it past there).

Here's what I had done to the bike as a 250 **at ~800ft ASL:

- FMF powercore 4
- Snorkel removed
- Dynojet 2182
- 128 main jet
- needle on the 3rd clip from the top w/ washer on top

This setup was running a little bit rich but pretty dang close.

Today I installed a 132 main jet and put the washer underneath the e-clip thinking I would need to richen it up a bit for the 351.

Anyways, I just pulled the plug and it is really fouled up, could moving to the 132 really be too much? I thought people ran much bigger mains at my elevation. I guess I should go back to the 128 and drop the needle a bit.

If your running your lid, that make a huge difference in jetting. Most the guys here who are looking for maximum power are running lidless. I can't stand the noise & don't race, so I run a kdx snorkel.

Bogging after 5k? Maybe try removing snorkel or perhaps kdx snorkel, huge difference in jetting requirements.

Wheew, got it pretty close to dialed in. I had to drop the needle as it was way too rich, it's on the first notch from the top now with the DJ132 main jet (800ft ASL). A/F screw is 4 turns out with the stock pilot so I think I'll order a #38 pilot and re-adjust. Airbox lid is on with the snorkel removed.

I also need to order heavier clutch springs (maybe a new clutch while I'm at it) as this thing slips the clutch rolling on the throttle around 5k rpm even in 5th/6th. I'm using non-synthetic oil as well which was suggested by Bill. I haven't taken it over ~6k rpm and have been babying it around town to put some miles on it. I'm super happy with how everything has come together so far, this thing is a beast and I haven't even gotten on the throttle yet. I'll put another 100-150km on it and by then I should have a new clutch and heavy springs! I will get around to posting pictures eventually.

Any recommendations for clutch springs/clutches? Barnett? EBC?
