Your 80 was probably faster.

 

I had an '85 KDX 80. It was a little screamer. There was a long field by my house and on days where my mom would pick me up from school I would get home before the bus would usually drop my off. So I would wait until the bus was coming and drag race it to the end of the field.

Our bus driver was a cool old dude that went by the name Butch and was not afraid to put the hammer down when taking kids home. The bus appeared to be governed to 65 and I usually beat it on that stretch so i knew the bike would go at least 65. That's warp speed when you're an unsupervised 12 year old... lol

 

In 1980 I bought a 79 KLX 250[didn't want a head light] compared to my 09 KLX [stock]it was a race bike. At first I put a super~trap pipe and muffler on it, Kawasaki came out with a kit that was a a exhaust sys and a cam that woke it up. I mostly rode MX bikes in the woods as back then as I only had one bike not like now.

Don't get mad at me but the newer [my 09] KLX at 250CCs is very lazy/slow and not very exciting. My KLX[09] is a very good bike and fun to ride[18000 miles] altho I don't have to worry about wheeling over backwards coming out of corners.
