Default Kick starter for a 2018+?

I noticed that the 2018 KLX 250 that I just got has a plastic plug/cover for where a kick starter could go. Would you need a full kit or just at the kicker? That is under the assumption that you can kick start it at all. Also has anyone put a kick starter on the 2009-2014 EFI models?

You need a full kit. Last I saw around $300 in parts. Of course if battery is flat it's not going to start anyways.

IMHO the Klx is so reliable a kicker is useless added weight.

Always ride with a friend who can push hard enough to bump start you.

I gotta tell you, you need to find out if the EFI will work with a low battery (to the point where it won't turn the starter) and consider the odds of the dead battery start to ever be needed. I put 50,000 miles on my KLX650 including some woods and a lot of back-back roads without ever needing a kick start. When I actually had a starting issue, worn out spark plug, my friend would help bump the bike off. We didn't do any off road that day and I won't leave a spark plug in for more than a year with that bike - tank removal to get to plug in a reasonable way.

Electrics now are so reliable if the bike won't e-start it likely won't kick start.

Yes, that's how I got mine. I bought a complete 300 bottom end for $150 and stripped out the parts.

Did you keep the crankshaft or was it junk? Just asking, because a few have pointed out rod kits cannot be bought. Just a thought.

I kept it but it seemed like it's on the edge of usability. I would have used it for my rebuild but since every other part was new it seemed prudent to get a new one.
