you are a very lucky dude...... my brother is not gettin' my KLX if I ever have to ship out!
and a self professed noob should really just break it in and ride it; after 5-6K road and dirt miles under your belt, maybe try doing some big upgrades.
I would do a re-jet and free mods, if you tear out some of the smog stuff and get a little more fuel going throught it the bike will be much happier.

I meant Im a noob to the site. I have been riding for over 20 years. First bike ever was a 1985 yz80, then a 125. Turned 18 and bought a brand new Duc 996, then a 1997 Honda 900RR, a 2002 kx250, 05 Sucker Punch Sally and an 07 WCC CFL. I have a few miles under my belt. Thanks

Coming from a "KX" to a "KLX" is going to be disappointing in the power to say the least. Don't compare the two bikes because they just can't be compared. Keep the street stuff like was mentioned, and since you got the bike for free, spend a little and get it really the way you want it to be. Full pipe, Jets and 13-45 gears. You should be able to do all of that for less than $600.00. Still a great bargain. I love that you got the bike for free and you're still looking for free mods.
