Default Jetting woes

OK here I go.........
Ive jetted my bike per whats the "norm" on these bikes.
125 main
40 pilot
drilled slide 7/64ths
fuel screw out 2.5 turns
Melted out PCV restrictor in airbox
1/2in hole drilled in muffler baffle plate
KDX intake snorkel

This thing falls flat on it's face! Itll hardly carry me to redline and its burning RICH!
Ive run it with and without the airbox lid

The airfilter was a little dirty, but its not nasty enough to clog a bunch of air.

I had the needle shimmed 1.5mm, then took out the shims and ran it stock.

Any suggestions????

Thanks

Try taking off the airbox lid all together. Also whats your elevation?

Im right at 880ft above sea level.
I ran it with and without the airbox lid.

beats me really, i would think that maybe your pilot is too big, or somethings up with your needle too. at that altitude i'd think you'd be ok.

You've got to get rid of the stock exhaust! The carb mods without an HMF, Big Gun, Muzzy (I know I left a couple out) exhaust just ain't going to give you the power you want! At idle mine will blow your hair back standing 10 feet behind the exhaust (okay my hair is getting pretty thin these days).

Even with a more free flowing exhaust my bike ran like crap with the 40 pilot jet @ 200' above sea level. I went back to the stock pilot, N1TC needle 2nd clip position, tried 125, 128, 130 main jets and am going to go back to the 128. I have an enlarged airbox opening, I couldn't get rid of a lean condition at 3/4 throttle with the lid off, so I just enlarged the stock one. Pulls good but a tad rich with the 130.

Seems like you'll have to play with those jets too - what seems to work for one bike at the same elevation doesn't for another.

For HardTaco's bike, I suggested 128 main, stock 35 pilot, N1TC w/clip at 3rd, fuel screw at 2.0 out from lightly seated, pull the airbox lid off, drill the stock exhaust 1/2" through the first baffle. We're near sea level, few hundred feet above maybe. After that, he says that was the first time he'd been able to red-line the bike, and is working good all over. So I think it's jetted and running pretty well even w/stock pipe (drilled). Of course, the temp is cool here, 40's and 50's, so the air is dense. As spring and summer progress, one may need to drop the needle to the 2nd clip, but for now with the cooler temps the above jetting is working well.

Bryantjt, one thought, you might want to put the 128 back in and raise the needle to the 3rd clip and try that and maybe try the fuel screw at 2.0 at the same time. And I'd just pull the airbox lid. Try to get as much air as you can and jet for that.

NoBrakes,
Ya think with the 125 main I have, the stock 35 pilot and maybe a .75mm shim under the needle Id be OK?

Im really wanting to run with the airbox lid on (wanting to do hare-scrambles) but just to get it back on the road Id be willing to run with the airbox lid off for now.

I don't know how the shim measurement compares to the N1TC needle clip positions, so I can't answer that. I think: 128 main, N1TC 3rd clip, no airbox lid, fuel screw 2.0. If you run the airbox lid, just pull the snorkel completely. Sometimes it's really hard to tell if you are a tad lean or a tad rich when you are close. Use the airbox lid to determine which one it is, i.e., pull the lid, do your test - better or worse? Put the lid on, do your test, better or worse? Kind've like being at the eye doctor and flipping lenses on that machine. Adding the lid richens it up, removing the lid leans it out. You can use this as a test to see which way to go on the needle or main jet.

But the lid is not really doing anything for you except limiting the air supply so why use it, except maybe as a check to see if you are rich or lean? Some folks basically just cut a large hole in it which pretty much achieves the same thing.
