for sure, you won't pass smog in california if you have the air box lid off on a car....luckily no smog inspection for motorcycles....any "modification" or open air box needs to have the emission approval sticker and/or paperwork....for open cone air filter like k&n....k&n will only send this sticker if they designed the intake for that specific vehicle....you have to take a picture after you install it and send it to k&n...they send the sticker to be 100% legal....i've taken the picture in a completely different vehicle to get more stickers from k&n for my other vehicles....
