Default initial valve adjust?

Hi everyone, the owners manual says the first adjust should be checked at 7500 miles, but as I read some past posts it seems alot are checking them sooner. any insight on this?

thanks
Dave

YES! I thaught my valve clearances were off, so at 3000 miles i took it in to have them checked, and actually got my bike back yesterday. My valves were with in spec, so at 3000 on my bike they didnt need adjusted, and i have all the mods done, big gun rejetted carb, 13t sprocket, and such... the mechanic actually commented on how much better it ran, he was really surprised that it rips now... hehe...

I checked mine myself at about 800 miles and they were all slightly tight. A $65 Hot Cams valve shim kit off e-bay fixed me up. At around 3000 miles I installed my 300cc cylinder and while I had everything apart I checked them again and everything was right where I left it when I adjusted them.

They are easy enough to check yourself - only requires removing the valve cover cap and aligning the piston to top dead center. You'll need feeler gages to check them. If you are worried about it, it could at least give you some piece of mind. I'd say it would take about an hour to check them. Longer if you need to adjust, though. Here's a link with photos of what's involved:

I think this is it. You want the 7.48 mm size shims. LINK

You can get them from other places around, but they generally run around $85 or so. Like here:

http://www.cyclebuy.com/shopping/shims/shimkits.htm

But why pay more than you have to?

The e-bay link above is not from the same seller I purchased from, so I can't vouch for them. If you're concerned about e-bay sellers, the kit from Cyclebuy is not that much more.
