IMS to consider tank for the 09 generation bikes!
I've been really digging mine. I just put on a set of Maxxis Desert IT's on my '09 & have been riding the wheels off of it out in the CA desert. Having that tank on there has been great. And for how I ride my bike, having a clear tank is the only way to go. It's really amazing how much different you can make this bike if you put the time (and a little dough) into it. It really is a totally different machine than the one sitting on the showroom floor. I've flogged it mercilessly and it performs great!
I meant to do that when I had them both off the bike, but I forgot to. If I remember right, I remember thinking that they were about the same in that dept. Unless I plan on being gone for a loooong time, I don't fill it up to the top, but I fill it about 2/3 full & it doesn't feel any heavier to me then. I wonder if that's because the gas sits a bit lower in the IMS tank on the sides...
"Empty of course."
The full weight can be calculated once the empty weight is known. Some of the weight of the extra fuel will be offset if the bigger tank is lighter than the stock tank.
I started the change out process right after our Thanksgiving meal. It’s ready to on the bike, but before it goes on I’m making sure it’s leak free. So for now, it’s sitting on my work bench with about 1 gallon of gasoline in it and a brown paper towel under the two brass fittings. Will check it in the morning.
With both brass fittings out on each tank the weigh in went like this. The IMS tank weighed in at 3.5 lbs. while the stock tank weighed in at 6.0 lbs.

Just got my 3 gal IMS tank for my 2009 KLX. Really happy with the extra capacity and clear tank but I noticed a fit issue while I was installing it. I don't have time to read this entire thread so excuse me if I'm being redundant.
On the rear of the tank is the mount where there is a little block of rubber with the grommet on top. The block is 3/4" thick and held the rear of the tank up too high, leading to a very poor interface with my Corbin saddle. I had to trim the block to 1/2" thick, to get the rear of the tank to sit down in place properly and allow the saddle to slide into the right place. I don't know if this problem is specific to the Corbin or if the stock saddle has it too.
Fit of the radiator shrouds also isn't as clean as stock but got them to work with a little persuasion. I guess this is standard stuff with aftermarket tanks. Really looking foreward to being able to ride without always watching the odo and sweating about turn around times.
