Not so sure about that in california unless you take a non road legal bike thru alot of hassel to get it approved. All of the bikes I have ever seen from factory in the stock form here in Californis have had steel tanks. I think its an ignorant requirement like most laws here!

FYI I think just about all cars / trucks have plastic tanks anymore.

Almost every new BMW bike has had a plastic tank for about a decade now.

Your right. I think plastic would hold up better in an accident anyway.

It has to do with gassing off of vapours through the plastic. Some tanks are treated and are OK for DOT. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

I got my bike inspected & home today. I asked the fellow who did it about it, and he said he wasn't worried about it but could check his book of rules for me if I really wanted to know. I said that's OK. So I guess I still don't know for sure.

Now I better email about these tanks...
