I Did a BAD BAD Thing Today.....
Today while changing my oil I pinched the oil filter cover o-ring between the cover and the right side case. Never had that happen before on this bike or any previous atv's or atc's that had the same setup. Luckily I noticed it before refilling with oil, also luckily I kept one of the FRAM ones that come in every FRAM box because I picked up a K&N this time as its all the shop had in stock. So I don't have a garage at my place so I was working on the bike at my parents' place 3/4 mile away. Dad let me take his bike to come up and get the o-ring.......and this is where the BAD BAD thing occured.......
If all you've ever ridden is quads and 3500 miles on the KLX DO NOT I repeat DO NOT take a mid 80's muscle bike for a spin...........you won't want to come back! I don't have a good shot of the bike but stuff an 1100cc V-4 intoa cruiser-ish frame, 100+ HP at the rear wheel and a 11,000 rpm redline.
Super comfy Corbin seat on it, high bars, very upright seating position, until you whack the throttle and you are very much pushed down and back into the saddle. Rolling along at 50 mph in 5th gear was just shy of 3,000 rpm, not even a quarter turn and lemme tell ya 85 comes up DAMN QUICK!!! Now I see the attraction to sportbikes, and also see why I chose the 250 for a first bike...............WAYYYYY too much temptation to crack the throttle open and ride the 600 lb missile.
Anyway just thought I'd share this public service announcment.....

Speaking of sportbikes, while I was wrenching on the KLX my buddy stopped over on his GSXR600 that's running a straight pipe. Now that's an interesting sound, similar to an outlaw race car, but at 15,000 rpm. I offered to let him take a spin on the KLX but he looked at it and shook his head...........I think he was scared
I'm suprised the GSXR would even get to redline with a straight pipe. I'd think it would run terribly that way... and yes that would be insanely loud.. put a Harley ot shame. My friend was changing the pipe on his R6 after a crash and it was very loud jsut at idle.
I also own a BMW R1150R which is relatively quick, but much slower than the ZX9R I used to own. It's possible to ride fast bikes and still ride the KLX. It's a different animal. If you really want ot experience raw speed, try a GSXR1000. Doesn't have the top end speed of a ZX14 or Hayabusa, but it has the best power to weight ratio so it's a lot quicker. It's a special experience to be on a machine that easily lifts the front wheel in 3rd at 120mph.The VMax only dreams of that kind of performance.

I know what you mean, all I have had before this was sportsbikes. The acceleration from them is something you will never forget.

Hope no one took that the wrong way, I wasn't hinting that it had more than a sportbike, just that it had incredible power. Its a very unassuming bike, I mean look at it.
Here's a Honda add for it back in the day..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGfJ9IqXcoE
