How does this valve look?
If the valves are installed out of the box and fit, you can lap them in . Its cheap and easy. It insures a good seal.
They may not need to be replaced. They need to be inspected by some one who knows what they are looking at.
Those divots in the piston are for when its timed right. A little off and they hit the piston anyhow.
I would not blame the machine shop. If you want to go to a different one, then do that.

Thanks guys for the info. I did take it back to the machine shop where I had the valves shimmed and they showed me right away where the intake valves had hit on the piston just a bit. The mark is identical on both valves where it hit. So they are going to remove the valves and spin them in a laithe to see if they are bent. Once they are either replaced or confirmed to be okay they will put them back in. Would it be worth having them lapped or will it not make any noticable difference?
I think I will also have them put the engine back together and then take it from there on my own. They said that would be less than an hour of work and not much cost to me. So there's where I am at.
Zomby, you mentioned that you wouldn't use that valve but it the appearance is fine. Should I just buy a new one anyway since it's out and would easily be replaced? Well, when I hear back on the condition of the valves I will update the thread. Thanks again gents.
I would send it to Zomby if it wouldn't cost me so much to ship my head all the way across and up the continent. I can't imagine it's cheap to ship out of the states as well. I feel fairly confident with this shop, they know there stuff and what they did had nothing to do with the problems my bike had, that's all on me.

Valves can not be straightened or it will break and look like the piston and head posted above.

dacoontz, It sounds like you are on your way to getting it all set straight. It sucks that you had trouble, but I think it could have been so much worse. Even with the excellent advice here on the board, sometimes you get in more than a little over your head
I think handing it off at this point was a wise decision. I hope the experience doesn't keep you from trying the next mod on your own.

Just an update, all four valves were "slightly" bent per the machine shop. I have 4 news ones, 4 oil seals, and the water temp sensor on order. $180 later for all that, crap. The machine shop is going to fit the new valves and lap them in to make sure they are nice and tight, thn they'll put the motor back together and I will do the rest. They can also do a dyno tune for me, but at $175 I think I will wait until later. They say that on average they can get about 5 more horse out of most engines, not sure they'd get that much more out of this one.
We all make mistakes sometimes....not everyone is as willling to admit it as you were. I respect that highly. Sure, it cost you more than you wished, but, you learned a lot, and perhaps your knowledge will pay off for you in the future.
As others have said, you will LOVE the 351! I bet all the feelings of remorse will melt as soon as you are able to give that thing WOT!

I did a similar thing on a honda 50 in 1973. It was not an interference engine and I lucked out. I have seen it too many times when a timing chain or belt breaks on an interference engine usually bends most of the valves. Then next step is the valve makes a hole in the pi$ton.
Glad you are going to have a 351. Mine has 400 miles on it and its just getting broken in. Its the total *****! We have cold and snow for the next 3 months
