Default Hotter Thermostat

As I understand it, the Thermobob kit comes with a hotter thermostat. Will that thermostat fit as a direct replacement for the OEM thermostat? And if so, who makes it and what is that manufacturer's part number?

On my KLR650, the Thermobob uses a smaller diameter thermostat than the OEM. The KLX250 housing looks very similar to the KLR650's, so I expect it will be the same.

The Thermobob is more than just a hotter thermostat. It also provides a bypass loop so you always have some coolant flowing through the engine even with the the thermostat closed. With the OEM configuration, the thermostat shuts off coolant flow completely when closed.

That is how the Thermobob is able to reduce the wild temperature swings the OEM coolent system subjects the engine to during warm-up.

Here is a link to the spare thermostat if you want to try ordering it by itself. But it won't fit your bike without the rest of the Thermobob.

Take the thermostat to an automotive parts store and match it up.

The KLX has an interesting alternative to the thermo bob - as I learned after doing the thermo bob. Seems there is a port to the back side of the thermostat at the rear of the cylinder. If you put an in-line fitting in the correct radiator tube and a fitting in the cylinder head, connecting them with a hose, it now has a bypass.

And here click

And here is the install click

The install shows which hose to cut for the fitting.

Mark,

Thanks for posting the links to the Thermobob "look-alike". It will be helpful to those who want to essentially duplicate the Thermobob, but at a much lower cost. I've done it already and it is quite easy to do. Thanks also for confirming that the Thermobob housing is dimensionally different from the OEM housing.

Couldn't remember who did it, but ingenious, finding a low buck solution for more uniform cylinder temp.
